AMEC Paragon wins contract for Turkish Black Sea gas project

A

MEC’s Houston-based subsidiary AMEC Paragon has been selected by the Turkish national oil company, Turkiye Petrolleri AO, to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) for a natural gas drilling and wellhead platform in the Western Black Sea near Akçakoca, Turkey. AMEC Paragon’s work aims to expand gas production capacity, currently achieved via three minimal tripods, by 35% to 75 million standard cubic feet per day. A new four-legged platform in 312 feet of water will be installed over two existing exploratory wells. After FEED, AMEC Paragon expects to provide detailed engineering and construction management for the platform facilities, pipeline and drilling rig.

Bayer considers MDI plant in Europe

B

ayer MaterialScience is considering building a world-scale production facility for methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) in Europe. The plant would have an annual capacity of 400 000 tons and could be commissioned in 2012. A decision on the construction of the facility is due to be made next year. If the project were realized, the total worldwide MDI capacity of Bayer MaterialScience would increase to 1.85 million tons per year. The demand for MDI in Europe is currently estimated to be growing at about six

percent a year. Just last year, the company increased its production capacities at KrefeldUerdingen and Tarragona to 200 000 and 150 000 tons a year, respectively. The new facility is intended to form part of a complete, newly designed MDI train that will also include production plants for the precursors nitrobenzene, aniline and diphenylmethane diamine (MDA). The train would be the largest and most modern integrated MDI production facility in Europe. MDI is an important chemical building block in the production of polyurethane foams and elastomers.

US$500 mn expansion planned for Kevlar

D

uPont plans to invest over US$500 million in a multi-phase production expansion for its highperformance Kevlar para-aramid brand fiber, starting with a Kevlar polymer expansion in Richmond, Virginia, later this year. For DuPont this expansion would increase Kevlar capacity by more than 25% when complete in 2010 and represents the largest Kevlar expansion since the product was introduced in 1965. Details about additional expansion phases will be announced at a later date.

Lanxess to expand EVM capacity

S

pecialty chemicals group Lanxess is to expand production of its ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVM). To meet the continually growing demand for this rubber specialty, 10 million is to be invested to significantly expand the capacity of the plant at the Dormagen site. The current permit allows for a maximum volume of 15 000 metric tons per year, an amount that could be realistic by 2009. The synthetic elastomer supplied under the product names Levapren and Levamelt is suitable for oil and heat-resistant applications in the automotive sector – in particular for seals and hoses. In addition, as a halogen-free polymer with excellent compatibility with flame retardants, it has ideal properties for the manufacture of cable sheathing and is also used for highly flame-retardant products deployed in construction.
