Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure

Atrial fibrillation and heart failure each have major medical impact. The substantial scale of their independent influence on morbidity, mortality, and public health has however only been appreciated recently. This realization has already had population benefit with improved early detection and prophylaxis against stroke and progressive pump failure. Their frequent coexistence, while long recognized, adds new layers to management decisions and the situations that can then arise are addressed in this volume. Our target audience are the subscribers to the Heart Failure Clinics series and the objective has been to enhance patient care. The authors of individual articles, while mostly having as their primary interest cardiac arrhythmia, actually represent a broad diversity of interests and talents and present contrasting but complementary perspectives. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation and heart failure will continue to rise and treatment options are set to expand. Accordingly, the complexity of the decisions for this group is set to increase. It is hoped that the perspectives in this issue will assist the broader community in making the smartest, most effective choices to achieve the very best in patient care.
