His facilitation of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) outcomes research that was pivotal in showing that multiple registered dietitian nutritionist visits enhanced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol lowering, identified a timeframe for the provision of MNT for LDL cholesterol lowering, and demonstrated that three to four health care dollars could be saved for each dollar spent on MNT provided by registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs). His status as a national and international leader in cardiovascular disease prevention, including serving as past president of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology, current chair of the American Heart Association Prevention Science Committee, and member of the World Heart Federation’s Education and Scientific Program Committees. His contributions as author and coauthor of over 200 manuscripts and book chapters on prevention of cardiovascular disease, editorial board member of several cardiology and diabetes journals, current editor of the American College of Cardiology’s CardioSource Clinical Community on cardiometabolic disease, and investigator on many large-scale research studies and clinical trials. His conceptual framework as editor of four preventive cardiology textbooks always includes a chapter on nutrition and invites RDNs to serve as authors. His leadership as director of the University of California Irvine Preventive Cardiology Program, which allows him to invite RDNs to teach preventive cardiovascular nutrition to medical students, residents, cardiology fellows, physicians, and health care professionals. His recognition of RDNs as nutrition experts by inviting RDNs to teach in national and international preventive cardiology education programs that he chairs. As a strong believer in the role that nutrition plays in preventive cardiology, he has the highest respect for RDNs as the gatekeepers of food and nutrition knowledge and information.
