OUTOKUMPU INVESTS IN IRISH ZINC MINE Outokumpu is extending its Tara zinc mine in Ireland to exploit the Southwest extension (SWEX) of its orebody. The C?47 million investment will secure the mine life until at least 2008 at zinc production levels of over 200 000 tonnes per year. The investment. including a new 10 000 tonnes per day ore handling system. is required to mine an estimated 10.4 million tonnes of ore grading 9% Zn and 2% Pb. Exploration continues and there is good potential to further extend the resource. Production from SWEX will start in 2001 and will reach full capacity by 2004. During 200 l-2008. Tara’s total annual output with SWEX will be over 200 000 tonnes of zinc in concentrates.
