MUSCULOSKELETAL ULTRASOUND. 2ND ED. M. T. van Holsbeeck, J. H. Introcaso. Mosby, St Louis, Mo, 2000: 648 pp, hardcover, $169.00.

There are few textbooks on musculoskeletal ultrasonography (US). This edition of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound by Marnix T. van Holsbeeck and Joseph H. Introcaso is certainly the most comprehensive textbook on the subject currently available. The book is divided into 19 chapters, an appendix, and an index. There are two introductory chapters on the physical principles of US and common artifacts encountered in US, specifically with regard to the musculoskeletal system. The chapters thereafter are divided into the US evaluation of muscle, tendons, bursae, and ligaments. Individual chapters on the pediatric musculoskeletal system, specifically with regard to fetal spine US, and a chapter on US of the superficial soft tissues and bone are included.

New to the second edition are individual chapters on pathophysiology, patterns of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and interventional musculoskeletal sonography. Also new to the second edition is a subdivision of the US evaluation of the hip and knee into individual chapters. Postoperative evaluation of the musculoskeletal system, including imaging of the shoulder after rotator cuff repair and the US appearance of joint arthroplasty, has also been expanded since the first edition. In summary, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound by Drs van Holsbeeck and Introcaso is the most complete textbook on
