This is the third edition of an established British textbook. It is aimed primarily at ‘A’ level and first year degree course students and would make an ideal sociological basis for Project 2000 nurses and any health care professionals undertaking diploma or degree courses. The text has been revised and clarified and has additional material which reflects current thinking. It give a comprehensive overview of sociological perspectives from Comte (1798-1857) to Garfinkel (present-day). The introduction is stimulating and sets the scene for a critical approach. There is exploration of what is involved in using and a diversity of sociological perspectives approaches/interpretations are analysed. The main chapters cover structuralism, symbolic interaction, ethnomethodology and research strategies. A full and explicit contents list aids the direction of the reader and the text is well backed up with references to research findings. At f7.95 a very good buy for libraries and personal use. R.D. This book is aimed at the absolute beginner presenting research in very structured and carefully guided steps reminiscent of do-it-yourself manuals. However, the book manages to be simple without being simplistic and adopts just the right interactive approach without talking down to the reader. An experiential approach is used which builds on the notion that the best way to learn about research is by doing it, and for this purpose it offers a series of planned learning activities which can be undertaken alone or working in a small group. It also provides tips to tutors which personally I found helpful e.g. the section on supervision of research projects. The range of references offered is very useful and up to date. So is the compendium of further practical information which serves as a useful starting point on a number of issues.

This is a useful addition to the Essentials of Nursing series and Barbara Scammell is to be commended for the clear and non-jargonistic way she has tackled a difficult subject. The book is divided into 3 sections: Part 1 The psychology and skills of communication; Part 2 Using communication in management; Part 3 Communication in nurse management at the point of service delivery. The book is well laid out with diagrams and tables that are easy to follow. It is interspersed with exercises for the reader to do, many of which could be initiated by nurse teachers, for the classroom or in the clinical areas. There are also short Case Studies useful in group discussions or for the individual reader to reflect on. I would recommend this book to all students entering nurse training. There is plenty of good material covering an aspect of nursing that is not in the more general textbooks. It would also be a useful addition to any ward library. I found this a fascinating book. It is clearly presented, very well set out and avoids the use of jargon throughout. The book is intended for self directed study but could also be used by nurse teachers for group work. The theme is clear. In order to manage oneself, one must know oneself. Hence the chapters progress from ‘Know thyself to ‘valuing yourself, ‘motivating 157
