HE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS HAS BEEN GRANTING HONORARY MEMBERSHIP TO NONMEMBERS FOR their distinguished contributions to the field of dietetics since 1954. Every year, up to three nonmembers are named honorary members of the Academy based on their professional knowledge, technical expertise, and promotion of the Academy’s mission, vision, and values.
Those chosen as honorary members have also demonstrated good will through notable national or international service, promoted nutrition and dietetics practitioners as contributors to the optimal health and nutritional status of the public, and aided in the advancement of the profession and the Academy. In October 2016, at the 99th annual Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Boston, MA, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics awarded honorary memberships to Sylvia B. Rowe and Howard A. Wolpert, MD.

Her work in nutrition communications, her ability to understand the consumer perspective, and her willingness to share her expertise with registered dietitian nutritionists, both through her communication roles and her leadership roles. Her advancement of the profession through her work with the Academy and other scientific and professional associations, such as the Institute of Medicine, American Heart Association, the Obesity Society, the American Society for Nutrition, Weight Watchers International, the International Women’s Forum, the National Press Club, and others. Rowe is known for her work forming partnerships among industry, government, and academic institutions to advance science and inform consumers about important nutrition topics to improve health. Her commitment to registered dietitian nutritionists as food and nutrition experts who promote optimal health. Rowe has spent her career working with, training, and promoting registered dietitian nutritionists as nutrition experts and nutrition communicators. She has taught and mentored countless students and registered dietitian nutritionists through her lectures at Tufts University, her domestic and international presentations, and her frequent meetings to bring together coalitions on important nutrition and health topics.
His distinguished contributions and research, exploring nutritional factors that affect glycemic control in diabetes management; in particular, his examination of continuous glucose monitoring records to identify the unique effects of dietary fat on glycemia and insulin requirements. His important and impactful publications for patients, families, and health care professionals about intensive insulin therapy. His outstanding reputation as a compassionate, patientcentered endocrinologist for nearly 30 years at Joslin Diabetes Center, specializing in intensive diabetes management and insulin pump therapy for individuals with type 1 diabetes, while relying on the full participation and nutrition expertise of the registered dietitian nutritionists on his team. His dedication to putting the needs of people with diabetes first by working with policy makers to broaden insurance coverage for people with diabetes using continuous glucose monitors. His innovative expertise, applied to the development of digital tools, that help patients better manage challenges related to diabetes and food. His efforts to advance the careers of nutrition and dietetics practitioners as a teacher and mentor, and of his recognition of the importance of food and nutrition in the treatment of people with diabetes.
