As a reference, it is comprehensive including chapters concerning ethics, medico-legalliability, communication problems in gynaecology, and the application of molecular biology to gynaecology. There is useful information on such pertinent facets of practice as habitual abortion, investigation of the infertile couple, and a critique of the new reproductive technologies. This review would be churlish without significant praise for the quality and clarity of the illustrations by Rebekah Dodson. Not since Victor Bonney's scholarly illustration ofhis own textbook of gynaecological surgery in 1911, have I seen such clear and weil produced illustrations for any textbook. As a resource for physicians, residents in training, and those of us who labour in the Held of general obstetrics and gynaecology, this opus would provide an excellent resource. It would, furthermore, be fun to read.
here are many textbooks of gynaecology available to the undergraduate and postgraduate. Some are lovingly updated at intervals in honour of famous practitioners who put pen to paper many years ago. Others seek to impart information concerning more and more subspecialized areas of our practice. This is a new book comprising the combined efforts of98 contributors under the excellent editorial direction of Dr Copeland. Its 1,193 pages are composed of 66 chapters. The format is admirable with large printing, an initial outline of the scope of the chapter, and readable paragraphs. A problem of all textbooks is the time of gestation. Its very nature tends to make some of the material dated, but with publication in 1993, it is contemporary in its information and references are included from 1990 and '91, together with many from historically interesting works spread over the last century.
