ABB WINS US$180M SUBSEA SYSTEM ORDER ABB has secured a US$180 million order from the Norway’s Statoil to deliver a complete subsea gas production system for the development of the Statoil-operated Snøhvit gas field in the Barents Sea. The subsea system will be remotely controlled by operators at Statoil’s liquified natural gas plant near Hammerfest on Norway’s northern coast. This is done via a 161 kilometer fibre optic cable, the longest ever used in such a subsea operation. The technology for controlling both the on- and offshore operations is also being provided by ABB. The terms of the contract include project management, engineering, manufacturing of hardware, testing and technical services for the delivery of an integrated subsea production facility for the gas field. The engineering work will start immediately and the project is due to be finalized in 2005.
AMEC EXPANDS ACTIVITIES IN CASPIAN SEA AMEC has secured contracts to help develop a massive oil field in the Caspian Sea and deliver a major portion of the strategic Georgian pipeline. The company has won an initial US$17 million contract to analyse and evaluate plans for a part of the vast Azeri, Chirag and Gunashli oil and gas field development with potential for significant additional work subject to project approvals. an AMEC consortium has been awarded a US$200 million contract for the project management of a 14 500 tonne topside facility. The contracts were awarded by the Azerbaijan International Operating Co (AIOC), a consortium of BP, ExxonMobil and other leading oil and gas producers. In related work in the Caspian region, AMEC’s associate company SPIE (46% owned by AMEC) has been awarded a US$320 million joint venture contract for the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline Co, led by BP Exploration (Caspian Sea) Ltd. The contract covers the engineering and delivery of 248 kilometres of oil pipeline through Georgia in addition to three associated pumping stations (two in Georgia and one in Azerbaijan) and is due for completion in mid-2005. The contract also includes an option, for an additional US$130 million, to deliver a gas pipeline with associated compressor stations along the same route.
MCDERMOTT SIGNS CASPIAN CONTRACT WITH AIOC McDermott Caspian Contractors Inc has signed contracts with the Azerbaijan International Operating Co (AIOC) in Baku for the fabrication of integrated topside decks for Phase 2 of the development of the Azeri, Chirag and deepwater portion of the Gunashli (ACG) field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea and the installation of a 28" gas trunkline from the Azeri field to the Sangachal Terminal. The two contracts are worth approximately US$390 million and will take approximately 41 months to complete. This follows the first contract award that MCCI received in
November 2001 with a contract value of approximately US$320 million. MCCI’s fabrication scope of work includes fabrication of the West Azeri (WA) and East Azeri (EA) topside decks, each weighing approximately 16 000 tons. The two decks will support drilling facilities, living quarter, power generation facilities and other process equipment and facilities. The pipeline scope of work includes installation of the 187 km long, 28” gas pipeline from the Central Azeri platform to the Sangachal onshore terminal facility.
FLUOR AWARDED REFINERY UPGRADE PROJECT Fluor Corp has been chosen to perform engineering, procurement and construction services on a refinery upgrade project in Ferndale, Washington. Awarded by Phillips Petroleum Co, the value of the contract was not disclosed. In compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s new regulations initiating the production of cleaner gasoline, the upgrade calls for the installation of a Cat Gasoline Desulfurizer Unit, that will use Phillips’ S Zorb sulfur removal technology, and the revamp of an existing gasoline splitter unit. Project engineering began in June 2002 and construction starts in October 2002. The project is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2003.
PETROBRAS STARTS PLATFORM BIDDING Petrobras reports that it is starting the bidding process for the construction
contracting of semi-submersibles platforms P-51 and P-52, to be installed in the Campos Basis, in the Marlim Sul and Roncador fields. The P-51 and P-52 platforms are scheduled to become operational by the second half of 2005. Each platform will be capable of producing 180 000 barrels of petroleum per day. The two platforms will be contracted through three simultaneous and supplementary auctions: one for the construction of the electricity generation modules, one for the construction of gas compression modules and a third for the construction of the hull and production facilities.
POWER GENERATION KVAERNER SECURES MAGNOLIA POWER PROJECT Kvaerner has been awarded the contract to construct the planned Magnolia Power Project, a 250 MW natural gas-fueled, combined cycle power plant in Burbank, California. Kvaerner E&C in San Ramon, California will perform engineering, procurement, and construction for the project, which is sponsored by the Southern California Public Power Authority. Kvaerner’s work will begin with US$300 000 in preliminary engineering tasks and continue with full engineering and construction when the California Energy Commission completes the state licensing process and the project receives financing in early 2003. Work will be performed on site and from Kvaerner’s San Ramon, California office, and the value of the total Kvaerner scope is estimated at US$112 million.
