Donaldson buys Western Filter

D

onaldson Co Inc has acquired Western Filter Corp, a manufacturer of liquid filtration systems and replacement filters. Western Filter, based in Valencia, California, USA, designs and manufactures filters for hydraulic oil, fuel, lube oil, and coolant systems used in commercial and military aircraft and helicopters, military ground vehicles, and naval shipboard systems. Western Filter expects its 2008 sales to be approximately US$28 million. “The acquisition of Western Filter is a great complement to our existing aerospace and defense business,” said Jay Ward, senior vice president, Engine Products. “Western Filter is the largest independent manufacturer of liquid filters for the aerospace and defense markets, and the combination of Western’s liquid filtration expertise with our existing leadership in air filtration broadens the overall filtration solutions we can offer our aerospace and defense customers. We enthusiastically welcome the employees of Western Filter to the Donaldson team.” For further information, visit www.donaldson.com

Cookson sells Hi-Tech ceramic filters business

C

ookson Group plc has entered into a conditional agreement to sell its Hi-Tech Ceramics filter business to the German specialty chemicals company Sud-Chemie AG. The Hi-Tech business, which is headquartered in Alfred Station, New York, USA, had revenues of approximately £5 million and trading profit of around £1 million in the six month period to 30 June 2008. For more than 25 years, Hi-Tech has developed and produced fully sintered, reticulated ceramic filters, based on zirconia and alumina, for demanding applications in the foundry industry, particularly for investment casting, steel casting and iron large casting. The divestment of Hi-Tech, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year, is a condition of the European Commission’s anti-trust approval of Cookson’s acquisition of ceramic specialist Foseco plc earlier this year.

PMFG invests in China

P

MFG Inc is to open a new production plant in Zhenjiang City, China, to manufacture and supply separation, filtration and silencing equipment for the Chinese and other Asian markets. The plant will also fabricate nuclear steam dryer equipment for customers throughout China. PMFG has already received a business license to operate the manufacturing plant in China. The 40 000 sq ft leased facility is expected to go on-stream in mid-2009 and will initially employ 20 people. The plant will be the company’s first production facility on the Chinese mainland and is PMFG’s largest manufacturing investment to date outside of the US. “Developing a manufacturing presence in China will better enable the company to support China’s civil nuclear energy business, meet government goals, and at the same time enhance PMFG’s business opportunities. We have staffed the facility with a group of professionals with previous experience working in China and we expect to continue to add to our organization, including highly skilled technicians and engineers, as we continue to ramp operations over the coming months. In addition, PMFG has maintained a regional sales office in Singapore for 17 years and we expect our sales team will play an integral role in supporting our China operation going forward,” said Peter Burlage, CEO of PMFG.

It will also provide state-of-the-art hollow fibre production and module assembly technology across the full range of PRISM membrane offerings. “This new facility will ensure our ability to meet the strong demand for high performance membranes. ITT partners with Mercy Corps to provide emergency relief

I

TT Corp has formed a strategic partnership with Mercy Corps as part of its corporate philanthropy program, ITT Watermark. The partnership includes a three-year, US$1 million commitment to help provide safe water during emergencies created by natural catastrophes such as floods, droughts and earthquakes. Through this new partnership, ITT will support Mercy Corps’ relief and recovery efforts, which include the provision of dewatering and water purification equipment. ITT will also help Mercy Corps’ on-the-ground staff with rebuilding and recovery of water and sanitation infrastructure after the disaster. Mercy Corps, a global relief and development agency, collaborates with the United Nations to implement water and sanitation solutions during worldwide disasters. “Since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, there has been an increasing number of devastating natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina, the 2007 floods in Tabasco, Mexico, as well as the recent China earthquake and Myanmar cyclone. ITT has utilized its strength and expertise

in fluid technology in each of these situations to meet the water needs of affected communities,” said Steve Loranger, ITT chairman, president and CEO. “Through ITT Watermark and our partnership with Mercy Corps, we are building on our legacy of commitment, formalizing our proactive emergency response strategy and increasing our ability to deploy our resources as quickly as possible.” As part of the ITT Watermark initiative, ITT has established an Emergency Response Committee responsible for the coordinated deployment of ITT resources directly to disaster sites during water-related emergencies. The committee will work with Mercy Corps during the balance of this year to develop a plan for reducing risks and implementing turn-key emergency response protocol. This relationship with Mercy Corps is the second strategic partnership for ITT Watermark. In August, the company announced it had partnered with Water For People, an international development organization, to provide safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to 300 schools in Asia and Latin America by 2010. Fiberweb on form

F

iberweb plc’s trading between July and October 2008 has been steady and in line with management expectations. In an interim management statement, Fiberweb said that sales had been stable in the 17 weeks from 1 July 2008 to 30 October compared with the same period in 2007, although the company’s industrial business had experienced some weakness in a number of markets. Underlying operating profit and operating margin however were ahead of last year. Despite the strengthening US dollar, Fiberweb’s continued focus on cost reduction and working capital improvement has enabled the company’s net debt to be maintained at forecast levels. Fiberweb reports that while the fall in oil prices and weak polymer demand are beginning to reduce the recent severe pressure on raw material and energy pricing, costs on average have remained above those at the start of the year in a highly volatile market environment.
