BASF and voestalpine have developed a steel passivation compound that is free of heavy metals At the 2007 Hanover Fair BASF will be presenting a pioneering passivating compound that is free of chromium and fluorine for use on galvanised steel strip. This innovative BASF product has been developed in cooperation with voestalpine Stahl GmbH. BASF’s Lugalvan passivating compound has performed successfully in trials with voestalpine’s production facilities and in other European and American steelworks. The new compound is organic and fulfils the requirements of voestalpine and its customers for corrosion protection, visual appearance, paint adhesion, workability, welding and surface resistivity. In addition to protecting the base metal from corrosion, this passivating compound also forms a self-repairing layer. Previously,
C OAT I N G S this was only possible with chromates. Coatings based on the Lugalvan passivating compound can be applied with the same machinery as conventional anti-corrosion coatings. Press release from: BASF AG, Germany, website: http://www.basf.com (3 Apr 2007)

Tikkurila Coatings, an international Finnish company: acquires shares in Russian industrial paint companies Tikkurila’s industrial coatings business took a large step forward in internationalisation at the end of 2006. It made an agreement with a Russian party that Tikkurila would acquire a 70% share in two industrial paint factories in St Petersburg, OOO Gamma and OOO Ohtinski zavod poroshkovyh krasok. These names represent two significant industrial coatings companies in Russia: Gamma produces metal industry paints and the other is the largest Russian producer of powder coatings. As part of the Tikkurila Group, these companies will continue their operations under the names OOO Gamma Industrial Coatings and OOO Tikkurila Powder Coatings. As a result of this deal, Tikkurila’s share in the Russian metal industry paint market will double to over 10%. Simultaneously, the company is also taking a strategically significant step as a powder coatings producer. This move should also improve sales of wet paints to the metal industry as well as supplementing the selection of powder coatings that its marketing cooperation with Rohm and Haas already offers customers. Although the company’s Russian acquisitions are focused on industrial metal coatings, part of its strategy is to continually strengthen its position and expertise as a supplier of industrial wood coatings. The many solutions in the UV and waterborne product ranges are examples of this. The commercialisation of the company’s UVITEC method has also begun promisingly. Over 70% of Tikkurila Coatings’ net sales in 2006 came from outside the Finnish market. As a result of the Russian acquisitions, the international portion of revenue will approach 80%. The company’s goal is to be a strong
C OAT I N G S and preferred partner as a supplier of industrial metal and wood coatings in Northern and Eastern Europe. The great majority of the company’s products will continue to be produced in Finland and product development operations and management will remain there. Aggressive development of the Temaspeed distributor concept will continue to be an integral part of the company’s comprehensive customer service. It believes that the Temaspeed concept offers a superior competitive advantage in the sale of industrial coatings for industrial paint users, distributors and Tikkurila Coatings. There are already around 300 Temaspeed distributors in nearly 30 countries.
