Akzo Nobel opens plant in Vietnam
INDUSTRY NEWS Building paints in Western Europe: mediocre concentration [1 table] Coatings manufacturer SigmaKalon estimates that the 3 leading manufacturers of facade paints in W Europe share around one-quarter of the total market, while the top 5 and top 10 manufacturers corner around 33% and 42.5%, respectively of the W European market for building paints. Three manufacturers of automotive coatings (DuPont, PPG and BASF) corner 70% of the global automotive coatings market, whereas ICI, PPG and Valspar corner 70% of the packaging coatings market. The global market for marine paint is to 70% dominated by Akzo Nobel, Jotun, Hempel and SigmaKalon. The concentration for powder coatings is mediocre as the 4 leading European manufacturers Akzo, DuPont, Rohm and Haas and Jotun achieve a market share of 50%. Powder coatings: IGP completes factory expansion Swiss company IGP Pulvertechnik AG completed the expansion of the powder coatings facility at the headquarters in Kirchberg (St Gallen). The expanded facility came on-stream in early 2003 and now includes production, storage, dispatch and training facilities. A picture shows the expanded unit in Kirchberg. Akzo Nobel has opened a new powder coatings plant in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, Vietnam’s commercial centre. The facility currently has a workforce of 80 and occupies a site of 10,000 sq m. It will turn out the full range of Akzo Nobel’s Interpon powder coatings and is the twelfth Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings site in Asia-Pacific. With its joint venture partner Chang Cheng Securities Akzo Nobel was the first company to invest in powder coatings production in Vietnam. Morton Powder Coatings launches conductive-dissipative coatings Morton Powder Coatings has made available its Spark-Lite line of conductive-dissipative powder coatings which are touted as an environment friendly solution to static electricity dissipation. The coatings show a surface resistivity of between 10–5 and 10–9, which make them suitable for electrostatic protected areas. AC-Lak in powder coating JV AC-Lak of Liberec, Czech Republic, has set up a powder coatings production facility in the Industrial Zone of Liberec-South under a joint venture agreement with investment funds Zertka and LIF. Industrias Titan to expand Industrias Titan of Spain is poised to spend €8.03 M to put up three

Cyclics to open German CBT plant Cyclics Corp is putting up a new facility to produce cyclic butylene terephthalate resins at BASF’s industrial park in Schwarzheide. BASF will provide feedstock materials to Cyclics. The facility is hoped to bring in a capacity of 2500 tonnes/y. The plant’s output will be utilized for structural components and powder coatings.
