Degrémont, the water treatment division of French utility giant Suez Environment, has been awarded a design–build contract for a new reverse osmosis (RO) plant in Curaçao, the largest island of the Dutch Antilles. The contact, worth 24 million (US$28 million), was awarded by Aqualectra, which produces and supplies both water and power to the entire island. Designed to supply local populations with drinking water, the new facility will have a capacity of 18 000 m3 per day. It will be designed with an open intake structure, a bio-filtration stage, cartridge filters and two RO stages. Furthermore, a pH adjustment has been selected for the plant to ensure that it effectively reduces boron content in the water. Aqualectra requires the plant to supply treated water with a boron concentration of 0.3 parts per million (ppm), which is well below the standards that are currently enforced, including regulations in Europe. Other seawater desalination projects by Degrémont that make use of RO include plants in Spain at Carboneras (rated at 44 million m3 a year) and Bahia de Palma (25 million m3 per year), along with a plant in Fujairah, in the United Arab Emirates, which has been supplying the expected daily capacity of 170 000 m3 of water since June 2003.
Swedish centrifugal separation, heat transfer and fluidhandling specialist Alfa Laval has acquired Biokinetics from US-based Kinetics Group Inc. The company’s president and chief executive officer (CEO), Sigge Haraldsson, says that Alfa Laval is already active in the life science market place with a range of core products. However, as this market shows double-digit growth the company has to ensure that it penetrates this sector and captures its potential. According to Haraldsson, the acquisition of Biokinetics, which has a sales volume of around SKr550 million (US$71 million), will help Alfa Laval strengthen its position by combining the acquired company’s expertise and knowledge with its own existing know-how and product portfolio. The acquisition will also help the companies to move into the European and Asian markets. Biokinetics’ main products are designed for working with mammalian cell cultures. They include bioreactor units and modules for cell harvesting, purification and biodeactivation processes. Biokinetics is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
