Hyflux to supply containerised desalination system to Saudi Arabia

H

yflux Ltd, through its whollyowned subsidiary Hydrochem Saudi Ltd, has secured a US$48 million contract from Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corp to design, build and supply a containerised desalination system. The 30 000 m3 per day system will be located on the site of the existing Yanbu desalination plant on the Red Sea coast, 350 km north of Jeddah. It will increase the plant’s capacity to ensure a continuous and reliable water supply to the industrial city of Yanbu and the nearby Medina region. Hyflux will build 10 modular containerised units, which will incorporate the company’s proprietary Kristal® ultrafiltration membrane technology for the pretreatment phase of the seawater reverse osmosis desalination process. Each unit will have the capacity to desalinate 3000 m3 of water per day. The project is expected to be completed in about eight months. Hyflux’s modular containerised desalination solution provides high quality water while minimizing the impact on the environment.

and beverage processors in North America. Currently a supplier of ‘end-to-end’ water solutions to the European food and beverage industries, Envirogen will now employ its technology portfolio and operations management expertise in North America to deliver programs for incoming water treatment, process water conditioning, process filtration, water recycle and re-use and wastewater treatment. Envirogen will help North American food and beverage processors prepare water from municipal or impacted groundwater sources, enhance facility throughput, and reduce water footprint at the lowest lifecycle cost. Richard Reese, president and CEO of Envirogen, believes his company has a unique approach to providing water and wastewater treatment solutions to food and beverage companies. “We combine proprietary technologies with sound process engineering, system design and construction, along with operations services to develop comprehensive solutions for our customers. We can support our clients at any point of the project development and implementation process. Our full-service options include guarantees for performance, operating costs and the lifetime of equipment assets,” Reese said. Envirogen has been providing water solutions to food and beverage processors in Europe for more than a decade under the Puresep brand. These include the treatment of groundwater and surface water sources via filtration and ion exchange; incoming water treatment solutions via filtration, ion exchange, disinfection and membrane technologies; process water treatment solutions using membranes, de-aeration, disinfection and sterilization; and wastewater treatment solutions that feature recovery and re-use. Global customers of Envirogen’s European operations include Heineken, Diageo, Britvic, SABMiller, Carlsberg and MolsonCoors. Envirogen already operates in the US, treating and managing impacted groundwater using biological, physical chemical and adsorptive technologies – with over 80 installations country-wide. Todd Webster, Envirogen’s West Regional vice president, says that the company’s offering to food and beverage processors is particularly timely considering the industry drive for reduced water footprint and the extreme drought conditions in California and the US Southwest. “At Envirogen, we have the ability to help companies utilize alternative source water and

to make their existing water sources work harder – and with better quality. Within the processing facility, there are a number of opportunities to reduce overall water usage, to make more efficient usage of expensive water sources, as well as investigate water re-use approaches,” Webster said. “We have done this for companies worldwide, and we’re ready to implement tailored solutions to meet new and emergency water requirements in the United States right away.”

MINING

LiqTech wins its largest ever order

L

iqTech International Inc has received a US$6.1 million order from an international mining company to supply a complete system to remove heavy metals from wastewater. This order is the largest single order ever awarded to the company. The system is based on LiqTech’s Ultra Filtration (UF) membranes and also includes pre-treatment and a de-watering unit to further reduce the amount of harmful wastewater to be handled. It should be delivered this year to a European site, with final installation expected to be completed in the first half of 2016. LiqTech CEO Sune Mathiesen said: “A major part of our business this year has been in applications that require the robustness of our filter. For example, applications for heavy metal removal from industrial wastewater and scrubber water systems for power plants and marine applications. This order is in the same family of some of our recent successes and we believe that the increased environmental focus around the world will create additional opportunities for our technology. The customer ordered a pilot unit last year and after a successful 3 month trial the two companies entered into negotiations for the complete system.

cel Energy is to install modified Ristroph fish protection intake systems from Evoqua Water Technologies at its Black Dog generating facility in Burnsville, Minnesota, USA. Eight Evoqua fish-friendly screening systems utilizing non-metallic modified Ristroph baskets will prevent small fish from entering the plant’s water intake and cooling system and return them to the river, allowing them to continue movement downstream. The installation should begin in autumn 2015 and be completed in 2016. The new equipment is expected to significantly increase biodiversity in the region through the protection of fish species and seasonal larvae.
