Hyflux to supply containerised desalination system to Saudi Arabia

yflux Ltd, through its whollyowned subsidiary Hydrochem Saudi Ltd, has secured a US$48 million contract from Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corp to design, build and supply a containerised desalination system. The 30 000 m3 per day system will be located on the site of the existing Yanbu desalination plant on the Red Sea coast, 350 km north of Jeddah. It will increase the plant’s capacity to ensure a continuous and reliable water supply to the industrial city of Yanbu and the nearby Medina region. Hyflux will build 10 modular containerised units, which will incorporate the company’s proprietary Kristal® ultrafiltration membrane technology for the pretreatment phase of the seawater reverse osmosis desalination process. Each unit will have the capacity to desalinate 3000 m3 of water per day. The project is expected to be completed in about eight months. Hyflux’s modular containerised desalination solution provides high quality water while minimizing the impact on the environment.

iqTech International Inc has received a US$6.1 million order from an international mining company to supply a complete system to remove heavy metals from wastewater. This order is the largest single order ever awarded to the company. The system is based on LiqTech’s Ultra Filtration (UF) membranes and also includes pre-treatment and a de-watering unit to further reduce the amount of harmful wastewater to be handled. It should be delivered this year to a European site, with final installation expected to be completed in the first half of 2016. LiqTech CEO Sune Mathiesen said: “A major part of our business this year has been in applications that require the robustness of our filter. For example, applications for heavy metal removal from industrial wastewater and scrubber water systems for power plants and marine applications. This order is in the same family of some of our recent successes and we believe that the increased environmental focus around the world will create additional opportunities for our technology. The customer ordered a pilot unit last year and after a successful 3 month trial the two companies entered into negotiations for the complete system.

Eight Evoqua fish-friendly screening systems utilizing non-metallic modified Ristroph baskets will prevent small fish from entering the plant’s water intake and cooling system and return them to the river, allowing them to continue movement downstream. The installation should begin in autumn 2015 and be completed in 2016. The new equipment is expected to significantly increase biodiversity in the region through the protection of fish species and seasonal larvae.

The Tafalla-Olite WWTP receives the wastewater from the two towns. The facility has a daily flow rate of 5555 m3, although it currently treats an average 4993 m3 per day for a population equivalent of 14 000 people. Acciona Agua’s service will start on 1 July 2015 and will run for two years, with two possible annual extensions. The contract is worth up to E514 000.

The Huai Fang plant is operated by Beijing Drainage Group and has been under construction since 2014. When it goes into operation in 2016, the Huai Fang plant
will be equipped with the ultrafiltration membrane bioreactor technology and an ozone system to treat the wastewater. The wastewater treated by the Huai Fang plant may be reused for city management projects or discharged into wetland and watercourse. It will be the largest underground reuse water project in Asia with a capacity of 600 000 m3/day and handling the wastewater produced by over 3 million people.

ndritz Separation is to supply a paddle dryer to Kore Infrastructure for a biosolids recovery plant currently under construction in Rialto, California, USA. Biosolids from wastewater facilities in Los Angeles, which would normally have gone to landfill, will be converted into biodiesel and biochar at the plant. Start-up is scheduled for the second quarter of 2016. The Andritz Separation dryer will reduce the biosolids volume by up to 80%, while preserving its energy content for further recovery. There are more than 200 Andritz paddle dryer installations worldwide.

Under its 2015–2021 strategic plan, Dubai Municipality has started to award mega infrastructure projects based on the approved Drainage and Irrigation Master Plan to upgrade the existing STPs and to enhance the performance of the whole existing sewerage system.
