ANOMIE, ALIENATION, AND ADOLESCENCE SPECIAL SECTION

Calvin F. Settlage, M.D.) Editor

The papers in this section were gathered from several sources, but mainly from a Panel on Alienation Reactions in Present-Day Adolescents, held at the Meetings of the American Academy of Child Psychiatry in Philadelphia, October 12, 1968. They present the observations and thoughts of experienced clinicians who have addressed themselves to the question of the relationship between adolescents and society, between the changes which the individual undergoes during adolescence and the changes taking place in culture and society, and between the problems which each poses for the other. The papers range from consideration of the changing and present state of our culture in the light of its history, through consideration of the current parent and adolescent generations and subgroups within the adolescent generation, to consideration of individual adolescents; the approaches are variously anthropological, psychological, developmental, clinical, and theoretical; and the purpose of all the authors is to provide understanding of the complex, interacting forces which determine adolescent, parental, and societal behavior.
