Filtration+Separation March/April 2015

Positive patient trial for virus treatment Biotech firm Aethlon Medical has revealed the first patient enrolled in a feasibility study for its Hemopurifier treatment has completed the program with no device-related adverse reactions. The study protocol, which is being administered at DaVita Med Center Dialysis in Houston, United States, is enrolling 10 chronic dialysis patients infected with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) to receive six treatments of Hemopurifier therapy.

The Aethlon Hemopurifier is designed to eliminate infectious viruses from the circulatory system.

Corn oil has a high market value, while removing it improves dried distillers grain processing properties. “By investing in this system we are adding to our revenue stream and diversifying beyond ethanol production in Nebraska,” said Mark Beemer, Aventine president and CEO. “High production levels and excess inventories nationally have led to tight margins, particularly in Nebraska. Until supply and demand are more in line, we are working to maximize profitability by better aligning our costs with our product mix and output levels. “Steps we’re taking include initiating a 20% cost-cutting program and a 20% system-wide reduction in total corn grind.” www.filtsep.com

orders for the second-generation system from Atlantic Container Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises and Horizon Lines,” said René Diks, manager marketing and sales, Exhaust Gas Cleaning at Alfa Laval.

The Aethlon Hemopurifier is a new bio-filtration device designed to eliminate infectious viruses from the circulatory system of individuals. The study will contribute safety data in a bid to promote the use of Hemopurifier for chronic conditions such as HIV and HCV, as well as acute bioterror and pandemic threats that are not addressed with proven drug or vaccine therapies. “With our feasibility study now under way, we will initiate our previously communicated plan to file Humanitarian Use Device (HUD) submissions that provide a potential FDA market clearance pathway to treat viral indications that affect fewer than 4,000 individuals in the U.S. each year,” said Jim Joyce, chairman and CEO of Aethlon Medical. www.AethlonMedical.com

Aventine invests in corn-oil separation Aventine Renewable Energy has launched a $2.4 m Valicor corn-oil separation system at its Nebraska Energy LLC plant in the United States.

Emission controls spark scrubber system demand

Mr Beemer added the grind reduction was expected to be temporary while the ethanol export market was robust with domestic demand expected to be strong from April to October. “Aventine’s management will continue to focus on risk management, disciplined hedging and margin management in response to national and international market conditions,” he added. www.aventinerei.com

Orders are flowing in for the PureSOx system.

New emission controls are spelling growth in demand for Alfa Laval’s marine SOx scrubber systems. Now in its second generation, the system has generated 70 orders as shipping operators look to comply with the enforcement of Emission Control Areas (ECAs) through exhaust gas cleaning. The orders include two full-scale pilot installations and the first deals struck in the US and Asia. “Shortly after its launch at SMM 2014 in Hamburg, we received

PureSOx allows for the continued use of heavy fuel oil while meeting emission limits in ECAs. The system’s first class approvals have been granted from Lloyd’s Register for the DFDS Petunia and Primula Seaways while the recently opened test and training centre in Denmark is helping with development. “We are continuously developing and enhancing PureSOx. We are currently preparing for the launch of an inline version during the course of 2015,” added Mr Diks. www.alfalaval.com/puresox
