High-silica zeolite production capacity increased at Nanyo complex

Borealis to invest €65 M in Porvoo Borstar PE plant

Evonik starts building Biolys feed additive plant in Russia

On 31 May 2013 Tosoh Corporation announced plans to expand its production capacity for high-silica zeolite (HSZ) at its Nanyo Complex. HSZ is characterized by high thermal and acid stability. The company began producing HSZ at its Nanyo Complex, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, in 1986. Tosoh built a second HSZ production facility, at its Yokkaichi Complex, in March 2009 and expanded those facilities in March 2013. The recently announced expansion of the Nanyo Complex’s facilities will add another 50% to the company’s annual HSZ production capacity. Tosoh will use the added capacity to supply growing demand while aiming for a top share of the global HSZ market.

Borealis has announced a major upgrading project at its production site in Porvoo, Finland. An investment of €65 M will serve to upgrade the Borstar PE2 plant technology to the third generation (3G), thereby extending the Borstar PE platform. This investment follows on the heels of one announced earlier in 2013, namely the €25 M investment in the installation of a new hot oil heater unit at the phenol complex of the Porvoo plant. Borstar is the cutting-edge technology which supports the production of a wide range of enhanced polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) products. With this most recent investment, Porvoo will be able to commercially exploit this proprietary technology at an even higher level by offering improved product properties as well as a broader operating window. Porvoo is the site of one of Borealis’ three Innovation Centres, the Porvoo Innovation Centre (the other two are the International Innovation Headquarters in Linz, Austria and the Swedish Innovation Centre in Stenungsund). In line with the Borealis Value Creation through Innovation strategy, this latest investment in Porvoo will significantly enhance the location’s standing as a hub for catalyst and process research, up-scaling and demonstration.

Evonik Industries has begun construction of a new Biolys feed additive plant in Volgodonsk, Russia. The plant will be erected by LLC DonBioTech, a jv of Evonik Industries AG and Russian Agroindustrial Trust, which is owned by Vadim Varshavsky. Commissioning is due in 2015 and capacity will be 100,000 tonne/y. Biolys is used as a source of L-lysine in pig and bird feeds. The Volgodonsk unit will use Evonik’s fermentation technology.

Clariant, Foster Wheeler and Wison to build pilot methanization unit in China Chemicals group Clariant has formed an alliance with engineering companies Foster Wheeler and Wison Engineering for a methanization project in China. The partners are planning to build a pilot unit which will enter service before end 2013. The unit will be used to demonstrate Foster Wheeler’s Vesta technology for making substitute natural gas. This technology is a methanization process for making substitute natural gas from synthetic gas derived from the gasification of coal and oil coke. The technology is simple, efficient, and cheap to install. Wison will be in charge of engineering work and the construction of the pilot unit. Clariant will supply the catalysts needed. The agreement may be extended to include the construction in China of factories using this technology. The partners are directly targeting the coal-to-chemicals market in China.
