Weir acquires South African pumps business The Weir Group is to acquire the CH Warman Pump Group (CHW), a pump supplier to the African mining which provides wear-resistant pumps, spare parts, and related services, principally for highlyabrasive mining, minerals processing and other industrial applications. CHW has a principal manufacturing facility and head office located near Johannesburg, South Africa, together with branches in South Africa, Ghana, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The previous owners, Research and Development Pty Limited and CH Warman Holdings Pty Limited, will sell the company for US$231 million (£113 million) in cash. Weir says that the acquisition will help it develop its relationship with international mining companies and improve CHW’s product offering. “This is an exciting deal for our minerals division […] It’s a perfectlyaligned acquisition right in our
sweet spot of high-margin, high-wear applications in highgrowth specialist markets,” said Weir’s chief executive, Mark Selway. “In terms of growth in the mining market I think the key drivers, particularly in commodity prices, will continue to be about China, and beyond that the industrialisation of India,” he told World Pumps. “We’ve driven our businesses very much into the oil and gas, power generation and the mining markets; all areas where we see tremendous capital investment and an ongoing need for growth as the population grows.” “The acquisition of CH Warman brings us geographically into areas where we can expand our position in Africa,” he added. “CH Warman has a stronger position in countries such as Namibia and Zambia, giving us the ability to take our full complement of products into those markets.”
American PD market to reach US$3 billion in 2013 The North American positive displacement (PD) pump market earned revenues of US$2.30 billion in 2006 and could reach US$3.01 billion in 2013, says a new report by Frost & Sullivan, North American Positive Displacement Pumps Markets.
pressure, and ability to handle high differential pressure, the report says, and this is particularly true in the North American market which could experience increased revenues due to investments in specialized and sophisticated technologies.
The peristaltic pumps segment of the positive displacement market is likely to grow the fastest, with a projected compound annual growth rate of 7.5% between 2006 and 2013.
“Saturated traditional industry applications compel manufacturers to penetrate new markets,” said Frost & Sullivan senior research analyst Dushyant Mehra. “The PD pumps market has traditionally been highly applicationfocused, with different pump types being used in specific applications in matured end-user industries, such as chemical processing, pulp and paper, and power generation.”
Positive displacement (PD) pumps continue to gain favour due to their relatively compact design, high-viscosity performance, continuous flow regardless of differential

Call for HI standard reviewers
Crane offers ‘one-stop-shop’ in UK
The Hydraulic Institute (HI) is looking for qualified individuals in North America to participate in the review process for the draft of its updated standard, ANSI/HI 2.1-2.2, Rotodynamic (Vertical) Pumps for Nomenclature and Definitions. This US standard applies to vertical diffuser and submersible motor deep well pumps and short set pumps that are driven by vertical electric motors, or horizontal engines with right angle gears.
Crane and its UK distributor, Tomlinson Hall, have set up an exclusive partnership arrangement which will allow its UK customers to purchase the company’s full DEPA and ELRO product range from within the UK.
Excluded from this standard are vertical in-line pumps, horizontal centrifugal pumps mounted vertically such as sewage pumps, and vertical, overhung impeller, close coupled, submersible single stage submersible pumps. Individuals and organizations affected by this standard, such as pump users and specifiers, producers, standards developers, government agencies, and general interest groups, should contact the HI. To participate in the canvass, contact Karen Anderson, administrator, technical affairs, at
[email protected] or call +1 973 267 9700.
The agreement between the two companies will offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ purchasing and distribution facility which, it says, will significantly reduce dispatch times for the air operated diaphragm and peristaltic pumps. Crane says that demand for both product ranges has grown considerably, especially within the UK’s food sand beverage, chemical processing and pharmaceutical industries. “DEPA has always been a good product, but up till now people in the UK didn’t know the best way to get hold of the pumps,” David Lindsay, sales manager at Crane, told World Pumps. “We wanted to raise people’s awareness of our products – especially our high end pumps. We are in the process of restructuring our company into two specific areas – oil and gas and chemical/pharma and food – both growing areas, which will benefit from our pump ranges.”
Wyko opens branch in Nigeria Wyko, an Eriks company, has opened its first branch, a distribution centre, in Lagos, Nigeria. Wyko Nigeria will offer a local stock of industrial consumable products from leading manufacturers along with its own brands. These will include Wyko’s SRB brand of split roller bearings, along other products featuring the company’s sealing technology, flow technology and tools and maintenance technology. “In terms of pump product support to our Nigerian branch I would expect all products to be available covering the water supply, food and beverages industries,” Ajibola Olajide,
executive director of Wyko Nigeria, told World Pumps. “We will concentrate on stainless steel fabricated pumps covering single stage end suction, vertical multi stage pressure boosting, and small diameter borehole pumps for water abstraction, which remains an important market for 4 in and 6 in borehole pumps.” “The product and service range on offer through Wyko Nigeria Limited will be expanded to include those Wyko-Eriks core product groups particularly relevant to the market, such as power transmission, flow technolgy, sealing technology, including local workshop facilities.”
