A new test lab is being established specifically for Crown with state of the art data recovery and Crown will now have the ability to test vertical turbines.

DAVEY ACQUIRES SPA-QUIP Australia’s Davey Products Pty Ltd has acquired the New Zealand-based SpaQuip Ltd, a manufacturer and supplier of pumps, filters, electronic controllers and associated components to the growing spa pool segment of the pool and spa market. The Spa-Quip business has an estimated annual turnover of A$14 million and the acquisition cost was about A$15 million. According to Davey, all major spa pool manufacturers in the home markets of Australia and New Zealand are customers of Spa-Quip. From its base in Auckland, Spa-Quip also has a growing export business in Europe and the Americas. Spa-Quip’s product range and customer base complement Davey’s pool and spa

activities. The electronic control technology developed by Spa-Quip potentially strengthens Davey’s product offerings to spa bath customers while Davey’s international distributor network provides opportunity to grow Spa-Quip’s sales in previously untapped regions. Davey reports that spa pools are becoming increasingly popular in the region as house block sizes reduce and as consumers look to improve their leisure choices at home.

EUROPUMP, HI PUBLISH VARIABLE SPEED PUMPING GUIDE Europump and the Hydraulic Institute (HI) have published a new guide for designing, specifying and operating successful variable speed pumping systems for lowering energy, maintenance and life cycle costs. Variable Speed Pumping: A Guide to Successful Applications was developed for plant owners and designers as well as pump, motor and drive manufacturers and distributors. Compiled and written by motor and drive experts in industry and academia, the guide is applicable for both new and retrofit installations. The new guide is a companion to the earlier HI-Europump Pump Life Cycle Costs: A Guide to LCC Analysis for Pumping Systems. ORDERS • South Africa’s Mather & Platt (SA) (Pty) Ltd has won a R5.5 million order for pumps and spares from ERTEC. The order covers 96 pumps (59 Mather & Platt split case pumps, 19 Lowara submersible pumps and 18 Turbosan sewage pumps), monitoring equipment and spares for a Zambian water reticulation system covering four towns - Kitwe, Chingola, Chililabombwe & Luanshya. Dave Johnson, divisional manager for Mather & Platt, said that they had been working with ERTEC for over 12 months to secure the contract. The pumps will be delivered in September and will be installed and commissioned by ERTEC. The contract will be completed by the end of this year. • ITT Industries’ Goulds Pumps Industrial Products Group (IPG) booked its largest PumpSmart order ever when Jiangsu SOPO Corp purchased two 500 hp PS 200 systems and two 200 hp PS 200 systems for its acetic acid plant in Zhenjiang, China. The PumpSmart controls, which provide operational logic for pumping systems, will cut energy costs and improve pump reliability for Jiangsu. “This company was named one of the most important national enterprises by the China State Council. Our involvement will provide a successful case study of PumpSmart for future manufacturers in China,” says Eric Shi, area sales manager for Goulds Pumps in Shanghai. • Met-Pro Corp’s metal finishing sales team has received a US$500 000 order to supply pollution control and fluid handling equipment to a major manufacturer of door and security hardware for both the con-

tractor and do-it-yourself home improvement markets. The order, which is expected to ship in the second quarter of this fiscal year, consists of four systems using four scrubbers from the MetPro’s Duall Division, nine filter systems from the company’s Mefiag Division and 17 magnetic drive pumps from the Sethco and Fybroc Divisions. The metal finishing sales team is a new initiative introduced by MetPro in April 2004. It is comprised of five regional sales managers from the company’s Duall, Mefiag and Sethco Divisions who individually or collectively market and sell products from all three divisions to the metal finishing industry. “One of Met-Pro’s stated goals is to capitalize on the synergies between our divisions,” said De Hont. “The strong synergies that exist between the members of the Metal Finishing Sales Team, combined with a cooperative sales effort, were major factors in securing this order. We are encouraged by the initial success of this new initiative and will continue to pursue other similar opportunities.” • For the third time since the white water rafting event was introduced to the Olympic Games, ITT Industries’ Flygt pumps will be used to power water around a white water rafting course in Athens, Greece later this summer. The company’s pumps provided the rapids for the last two summer Games in Spain and Australia. Six 150 kW propeller pumps, with a total capacity of 3.5m3/s, will be used to pump water around the 500 meter course, and Flygt will also supply the monitoring and control equipment for the pumps.
