In Memoriam David BenEzra, MD, PhD Professor David BenEzra passed away October 11, 2008, in Tel Aviv, Israel at the age of 66, surrounded by his family. David immigrated to Israel as a young child from Morocco. He completed a PhD in immunology (1969) and graduated from medical school (1971) at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. After his residency in ophthalmology at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center he spent two years as a visiting scientist and senior clinical staff at the National Eye Institute. He founded and served as director of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Unit and the ImmunoOphthalmology Service from 1986 at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center. He was appointed associate professor of ophthalmology in 1981 and promoted to professor of ophthalmology in 1986 at the Hebrew University. Professor BenEzra was a pioneer in his field in Israel and often challenged traditional concepts and introduced innovative ideas. He initiated the concept of comprehensive pediatric ophthalmology in Israel and performed the first intraocular lens implant in an infant in Israel more than 25 years ago. His main clinical fields of interest included pediatric cataract, intraocular inflammation, and pediatric refractive surgery. His major research areas included angiogenesis and intraocular inflammation. David BenEzra was the author of more than 200 articles and 5 books.
