MARKET PROSPECTS upgrading and development of the Statoil gas treatment facility at Karsto, in Norway. Karsto is a hub for gas production to 30 large and small fields in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea. The contract has a value of approximately US$175 million. In addition to detail engineering, the contract calls for procurement and construction assistance. The project is expected to be completed by 2012, with upgrading work beginning in the autumn of 2008.

3 oil & gas contracts for Aker Kvaerner

A

ker Kvaerner has signed three new contracts for design and supply of oil and gas treatment packages. The total value of the three contracts is approximately NKr160 million. One award is with Hyundai Heavy Industries for the design and supply of the Inconel gas/glycol dehydration unit to Adma Opco’s Umm Shaif offshore field in the United Arab Emirates. The second contract is with Maurel & Prom where Aker Kvaerner will deliver crude desalting facilities to Maurel & Prom’s new crude production site in Gabon in mid 2008. The third contract has been awarded by BG Group. Aker Kvaerner will deliver two new glycol regeneration systems for their Miskar platform in Tunisia. The units involved will be fabricated in Korea, Morocco and France.

Polyethylene plant for China

T

echnip, in association with INEOS as the licensor, has been awarded a contract by Liaoning Huajin Chemicals for a high density polyethylene plant to be built in Panjin (China). The contract covers the basic engineering design for the plant and the pre-commissioning support. The plant, based on INEOS’s Innovene S technology, will produce 300 000 tons/year of high density polyethylene intended for the manufacture of resistant plastics. The plant is scheduled for completion at the end of 2008.

acobs Engineering Group’s Singapore operations have been appointed by RohMax Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (part of Degussa GmbH) to develop its first lubricant additive manufacturing facility in Singapore’s Jurong Island. This plant will also be one of the largest of its kind globally.

Chemicals complex for Polish refinery

T

echnip has been awarded a contract worth approximately 160 million by PKN ORLEN SA for the construction of a new paraxylene complex in its refinery in Plock, central Poland. Technip’s operations and engineering centre in Rome, Italy, will execute the project which includes the engineering, procurement and supply of equipment and materials, and technical assistance for activities at the site (construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning). The complex’s production units will be based on UOP technology and have a capacity of 400 000 tons/year. The auxiliary system will be developed by Technip. Project completion is scheduled for December 2009.

Plastics from Chinese coal

A

ker Kvaerner has secured a contract from ShenHua Baotou Coal Chemicals Co Ltd for a new polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) facility at its coal chemical complex in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, China. Aker Kvaerner is providing the basic engineering design, technical advisory services, and certain offshore equipment procurement service. ShenHua Baotou is part of ShenHua Group Corp Ltd - the biggest coal enterprise group in China and one of the largest coal enterprises in the world. Both of the new plants will have a capacity of 300 000 metric

tons per annum. The PP plant start-up is expected in the latter half of 2010. Aker Kvaerner also provided project management consultancy services for ShenHua Group’s coal liquification project at Majiata, Inner Mongolia, which will be mechanically completed in the second half of 2007. The project was the first commercial scale plant incorporating direct coal liquefaction, a process that involves the conversion of coal to hydrocarbon liquids via hydrogenation.

Rohm & Haas to build Russian plant

R

ohm & Haas has announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility in the Moscow region. The proposed plant will produce polymer emulsions for a number of markets including paint and coatings materials, and adhesives. The plant is a greenfield facility with close proximity to key customers and with excellent access to local and imported raw materials and all key utilities. Construction at the site will begin in the first half of 2008 with completion planned for early 2009. The new plant will have an initial capacity of 50 000 metric tons, with a planned expansion to 70 000 metric tons to meet rapidly growing demand for polymer emulsions. The plant is the company’s largest investment in Russia to date and will be whollyowned by Rohm & Haas.

Brazilian plant to make polyethylene from sugar cane

T

he Dow Chemical Co, the world’s largest producer of polyethylene, and Crystalsev, one of Brazil’s largest ethanol players have announced plans for a world-scale facility to manufacture polyethylene from sugar cane. Under the terms of a memorandum of understanding agreed by the two companies, Dow and Crystalsev will form a joint venture in Brazil to design and build the first integrated facility of its scale in the world. It is expected to start production in 2011 and will have a capacity of 350 000 metric tons.
