In brief Zenon has received a purchase order to provide its ZeeWeed membrane for tertiary treatment in China’s Olympic Village. The order is valued at approximately $5 million. ZENON’s membranes will be treating secondary effluent from the Qinghe Wastewater Treatment Plant near the Olympic Village. The treated effluent will be reused to improve and enhance the visual appeal of the village, such as providing water for lagoons and ponds.

Boeing studies confirm value of air purification The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft will provide passengers with better flight experiences, in part because of the findings of a two-year study about cabin environments that was conducted in conjunction with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). “Our commitment to providing passengers with a better flying experience requires us to understand the science behind the perceptions and symptoms passengers report,” said Mike Bair, Vice President and General Manager of the 787 Program for Boeing. “We are researching many factors, including temperature, altitude, humidity and air purification, so we can make decisions that have
noticeably positive results for passengers and crew.” Boeing says that its decision to enhance purification of the Dreamliner’s cabin air resulted from participants’ responses to a variety of environmental factors examined during the DTU study. Research showed that a reduction of gaseous contaminants combined with modest increases in humidity provides improved passenger comfort. Air purification was found to be a more important factor than increased humidity for addressing many aspects of passenger complaints including eye irritation and general dryness. www.boeing.com; www.dtu.dk
DelStar opens new Chinese plant DelStar Technologies Inc has announced the establishment of a new manufacturing plant in China. The facility, located in Suzhou, China, is currently equipped to produce a range of the company’s extruded netting products. DelStar Technologies (Suzhou) Co Ltd will be fully operational in July 2005, and will begin shipping and warehousing products later the same month. The plant will provide additional resources to all of DelStar’s customers and distributors in the Pacific Rim.
According to Tim Cullen, vicepresident of sales and marketing, “Our expanded presence in China is a reflection of our desire to meet the needs of all of our customers in Asia. The reduced lead times and freight savings for our customers in the region will be considerate. We will continue to listen to the marketplace and will expand our product offering and geographic presence as necessary.” www.delstarinc.com
GEA merges with Mg Technologies In Germany, GEA AG has merged with its parent company Mg Technologies AG. The merger marks the end of a period in which the Mg Group’s holding company was restructured and streamlined. Mg Technologies is now planning to change the name of the company to ‘GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft’ and to move its registered office to Bochum. The merger was preceded by a ‘squeeze-out’ under which shares held by minority shareholders of Bochum-based GEA AG had been transferred to the company’s main shareholder Mg Technologies. In return for their stock, GEA’s minority shareholders received a cash payment of 48.15 per common share and 43.33 for each preferred share. In other news, Niro A/S, a Danish subsidiary of Mg Technologies, has acquired the remaining 50% of L&T-Niro Ltd in Gujarat, India, and the Food Division of its longterm Indian joint venture partner Larsen & Toubro Ltd. Niro A/S, a company within Mg’s process engineering segment, is now the sole shareholder of the former L&T-Niro Ltd joint venture. At the same time, L&TNiro Ltd took over Larsen & Toubro’s food division which develops and supplies manufacturing facilities in the food and dairy industries. Mg Technologies says that the acquisition has widened its (GEA) mechanical engineering activities and has strengthened its presence in the important Indian market place. www.mg-technologies.com
New business structure for Gamma Gamma Filtration Technology has unveiled a new name and corporate identity. From now on, Gamma Filtration Technology will be known as Clear Edge, the company says, adding that subsidiaries of the Clear Edge Group will retain their existing name but will adopt a new logo to reflect their part in this global organisation.
The launch of Clear Edge also marks the formation of a single organisation operating under a new business unit structure, comprising screen & filter, process, and screen print. CEO of Clear Edge Group Ltd, Colin Waudby, says that the reorganisation was fundamental to the company’s expansion plans,
enabling greater focus and concentration within application areas.
