Digital image processing Digital Image Processing (2nd. edition), by Bernd Jahne. Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1993. 402 + xiii pages, 168 figures. Softcover price DM 108,00. ISBN 3 540 56941 3. When I reviewed the first edition of this book [Comput. Phys. Commun. 71 (1992) 344] I endorsed it as accessible and relevant to a broad spectrum of practitioners of image processing. The book provides a good introduction to a wide range of basic image processing techniques, with some emphasis on motion analysis and 3D images. In this second edition some typographic errors have been corrected, but very little change has been made to the content to reflect recent advances. The impression of minimal new effort is supported by the observation that the bibliography contains only one new reference, and that to a 1989 computer graphics textbook. The only significant enhancement is to an appendix on PC-based image processing systems, where the range of specific systems considered has been updated. The loss of opportunity to incorporate new material means that this edition is not as neoteric as was the first. However, the book remains a valuable and readable introduction to image processing.
