Suppliers team up to improve SMC Automotive vehicle manufacturer General Motors Research and Development (GM R&D), resin producer AOC, coatings supplier Red Spot Paint & Varnish and tier one provider Meridian Automotive Systems have collaborated in a project, which principally aims to develop technologies that allow components produced from sheet moulding compounds (SMCs) to be powder primed, while maintaining the quality of the Class A surface. Powder primers help lower emissions of volatile organic compounds and overspray waste, but standard SMCs that are powder primed result in a leather-like surface look. Research conducted by GM identified that the problem was brought about by a combination of air and moisture that is emitted when an ordinary low profile additive (LPA) is used. Meridian Automotive supplied tooling and equipment utilized in standard production to assess various SMCs. AOC handled the

development of low-moisture content SMCs using its Atryl TCA resins, and incorporated novel LPAs into the SMCs in a synergistic process. Red Spot formulated a new SMC primer, designed to attain superior surface quality in powder primed components. Meridian is responsible for applying the Red Spot primer prior to shipment of SMC parts to GM’s assembly plants.

Impact modifier: new from DuPont

Goodlass Nerolac profits from India building boom and considers merger with Polycoat

DuPont has introduced a new impact modifier for thermosetting resins. Vamac MR, an ethylene acrylic elastomer, is designed to enhance impact resistance in applications that include phenolic resin modification, cyanoacrylate adhesives and flexible epoxy circuit board coatings. The new impact modifier is readily soluble in toluene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and other solvents used in coatings and adhesives. Vamac MR features good resin stability, excellent compatibility with polar resins and has no chemicals that adversely affect adhesive performance. The new impact modifier also exhibits excellent low temperature flexibility and thermal stability up to 280 deg Celsius. High Performance Plastics, Jun 2006, 1
