VERACEL AWARDS MAJOR CONTRACTS Andritz, Metso and Aker Kvaerner have secured major orders for the new greenfield Veracel Celulose SA pulp mill in Brazil which is due to start up in mid 2005. Andritz will deliver the world’s largest fiberline for the Veracel project. The Austrian company will plan and build the complete fiberline - from the digester to the finished market pulp bales - as well as a white liquor plant. The fiberline will have a production capacity of 900 000 tonnes of eucalyptus-based kraft pulp per annum. Meanwhile Metso Paper will supply a complete woodyard system. Metso Paper’s 25 million delivery includes a wood processing system for eucalyptus wood produced in Veracel’s forest plantations. The system, which will be one of the largest in the world, will include two chipping lines, a chip handling system as well as a bark and fuel handling system. Aker Kvaerner’s Pulp & Paper unit will supply Veracel with the boiler island. The 100 million boiler order consists of a recovery boiler and a bark-fired power boiler. Kvaerner Power will supply the RECOX recovery boiler rated at 4000 tons dry solids/day, and a HYBEX bubbling fluidized bed boiler rated at 81 MWth.

EU AID FOR UPM-KYMMENE PAPER MILL The European Commission has approved 24 million in aid for the UPM-Kymmene Shotton Paper Mill located in North Wales, UK.

Last year UPM-Kymmene was awarded financial support from the UK Government’s Waste and Resources Action Programme to stimulate new paper recovery from the municipal waste stream, and to increase UK recycling rates, in line with EU targets. UPMKymmene will provide 127 million of the 175 million total investment. UPM-Kymmene expects to commission the new recycled fibre pulp facility in November 2003, with full production by April 2004.

WEYERHAEUSER REACTS TO MARKET DOWNTURN Weyerhaeuser Co is restructuring its Dryden, Ontario operations to meet changed market conditions for its forest products. The Dryden sawmill will close permanently and the pulp and paper mill workforce will be reduced. Meanwhile the company’s Plymouth pulp, paper and packaging mill is taking two weeks of downtime, which may be extended depending on market conditions.
