Emergency Cardiac Care: From ED to CCU

Michael H. Crawford, MD Consulting Editor

Each year I spend considerable time on the inpatient cardiology service and on cardiology consultations. During these activities, my team interacts daily with the emergency department physicians. I am also involved administratively in putting together plans of care for various acute cardiac diseases that often arrive by way of the emergency department. I am sure that many of you share all these activities and more with your emergency department colleagues. Thus, I was delighted when Drs. Amal Mattu and Mark Kelemen of the University of Maryland agreed to edit this issue of the Cardiology Clinics. Representing emergency medicine and cardiology, respectively, they have assembled a group of outstanding experts from both disciplines for this issue, which is dedicated to the interface between the two fields. Today, physician interactions concerning cardiac patients are becoming more complex, with new cardiac imaging techniques being installed in many emergency departments. Furthermore,

heart failure specialists and electrophysiologists are increasingly interacting with patients in the emergency department first. This issue features articles that are dedicated to these emerging interface areas in addition to several articles on acute coronary syndromes, which represent the majority of cardiac emergency department visits. Finally, this issue will be an excellent companion to the November 2005 issue on chest pain units, which explores this aspect of emergent cardiac care.
