Brand of Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) Solution 500 rag/5 mL For intramuscular (I.M.) use in horses

oESCRIPTION Each 5 milliliters of Adequan ® i.m. contains 500 mg of polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan and Water for Injection

q.s. Sodium Hydroxide and/or Hydrochloric Acid added when necessary to adjust pH. Sodium Chloride may be added to adjust tonicity. pHARMACOLOGY polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan is chemically similar to the mucopolysaccharides of cartilaginous tissue, It is a potent proteolytic enzyme inhibitor and diminishes or reverses the processes which result in the loss of cartilaginous mucopolysaccharides. PSGAG improves joint function by stimulating synovial membrane activity, reducing synovial protein levels and increasing synovial fluid viscosity in traumatized equine carpal joints.

TOXICITY Toxicity studies were conducted in horses. Doses as high as 2,500 mg were administered intramuscularly to 6 horses twice a week for 12 weeks. This dosage is 5 times the recommended dosage and 3 times the recommended therapeutic regimen. Clinical observations revealed no soreness or swelling at the injection site or in the affected joint. No animal had any clinical illness during the trials and none showed clinical or laboratory evidence of toxicity

INDICATIONS Adequan ® i.m. is recommended for the intramuscular treatment of non-infectious degenerative and/or traumatic joint dysfunction and associated lameness of the carpal joint in horses.

CONTRAINDICATIONS There are no known contraindicetions to the use of intramuscular Polysultated Glycosaminoglycen. WARNING Not for use in horses intended for food. The next two issues of the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science will contain refereed papers from the 13th Equine Nutrition and Physiology Symposium held in Gainesville, Florida, January 21-23, 1993. Results of experiments were presented either as short presentations or in the form of poster presentations. The information was categorized into nutrition, exercise physiology, teaching and extension, and reproductive physiology. Data from 37 nutrition, 33 exercise physiology, 22 teaching and extension, and 37 reproductive physiology studies were presented to a group of approximately 250 researchers, teachers, extension personnel and administrators. The complete proceedings from the 13th Equine Nutrition and Physiology symposium can be obtained from the ENPS business office. Scientists were given the opportunity of submitting the results of their research studies to peer review. Each manuscript was reviewed by at least two other scientists. Those that were given an acceptable rating were revised according to the reviewers; comments, and now appear in this issue and the subsequent issue. The first issue contains those papers under the category of reproductive physiology; whereas, the second issue contains papers from the other three categories. We feel the information presented atthe Equine Nutrition and Physiology meeting is quality material that should be made available to the veterinarian, scientist and teacher. The Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society meets every two years and is a format for presentation of the most recent data on equine nutrition, physiology and teaching- and industry-related matters. This meeting is attended by teachers and scientists from nearly every equine program in the United States. In addition, equine scientists from Europe, South American and other countries have begun to contribute to the Society. Our goal is to bring together those throughout the world who are interested in equine research. We are extremely grateful to Dr. Bill Jones for his support of the Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society. Dr. Jones has been gracious enough to publish the refereed papers that result from each ENPS meeting. However, this is the first time two issues have been dedicated strictly to the papers presented at the Symposium. My thanks to Dr. Jones and each of the authors who have worked hard to provide quality information for the readers of the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science.
