MARKET PROSPECTS arrangement and will use reverse osmosis technology. The successful bidder will also enter into a 25-year water purchase agreement to supply desalinated water to PUB, starting from mid 2013. The water purchase agreement will set out the tariff structure, terms and conditions for the purchase of desalinated water. The tender will close on 30 September 2010 and is expected to be awarded in the first quarter of 2011.

MWH appointed for two hydropower schemes

S

cottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has appointed MWH to provide engineering and technical consultancy services for the feasibility and outline design of two hydropower schemes. Each scheme could have an installed capacity of up to 600 MW and would have the potential to store 30 GWh of energy. MWH services will include outline design of dams and intakes, geotechnical and underground works, power station, electrical/hydro-mechanical equipment and substations, as well as health, safety, environmental, cost, and quality management services. In addition to providing hydropower expertise, MWH will deliver engineering design and project management skills from the UK.

Black & Veatch upgrades 120-year-old wastewater plant

C

onstruction is under way on the expansion and upgrade of the Main Station water treatment plant operated by Illinois American Water in Peoria, Illinois. Black & Veatch provided design engineering and will also provide constructionphase engineering services for the project. The plant will remain in operation during construction of the new facilities, which include a new ultraviolet (UV) disinfection facility and a chlorine contact chamber. the second of its kind in Illinois. The water system in Peoria is the largest in the state to be permitted by the Illinois EPA for disinfection credits using UV. The expansion will nearly double the wastewater treatment plant’s reliable capacity, from 9.7 million gallons per day (MGD) to 17.5 MGD. The improvements, along with the addition of chloramines, will enhance water quality to meet future regulatory requirements by minimising disinfection byproduct formation within the distribution system.

Jacobs to expand Dow copolymer facility in Italy

T

he Dow Chemical Co has selected Jacobs Engineering Group Inc to provide engineering and construction management services for the expansion of its facility in Fombio, Italy. The expansion will accommodate the manufacturing of uniform particle size (UPS) copolymers to be used in ion exchange resins. The Jacobs contract includes a range of services from detailed design and construction management activities to mechanical completion. The project includes the installation of new process equipment and an upgrade and tie-in of existing utilities and a new control system.

Petrobras selects KBR to develop grassroots ammonia plant

U

nder a contract awarded by Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras), KBR is to provide licensing, basic engineering and extended basic engineering, and technical consulting services for the development of a grassroots ammonia plant in Tres Lagoas, Brazil. KBR will licence its KBR Purifier Process ammonia technology for the anticipated 2200 metric tons per day (MTPD) plant. Basic engineering services will be provided for the ammonia plant, as well as anticipated urea and urea granulation plants and

related offsite utility units. Under the contract, KBR will also provide technical consulting services through the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) phase of the project.

Ecopetrol awards Mustang conceptual study for new petrochemical complex

copetrol, Colombia’s national oil company, has selected Mustang, a Wood Group company, to perform conceptual engineering and technology evaluations to optimise the production of polymers at Ecopetrol’s grassroots integrated petrochemical complex in Colombia. The study will look at ways to achieve maximum revenue from the production of polyethylene, polypropylene and aromatics products from ethane, LPG and naphtha feeds from the Barrancabermeja and Cartagena refineries and the Cusiana gas fields. Location options for the new facility include Ecopetrol’s Cusiana or Cartagena sites.

Foster Wheeler signs framework agreement for Kårstø project in Norway

F

oster Wheeler AG’s Global Engineering and Construction Group has entered into a framework agreement, awarded by Statoil on behalf of Gassco AS, for front-end engineering design (FEED) services to support the development of the Kårstø oil and gas processing plant in Norway. The Kårstø processing plant is one of the world’s largest liquid petroleum gas (LPG) export facilities. Statoil is modifying the processing plant, on behalf of Gassco, via the Kårstø Life Extension project, to enable it to process new light oil/condensate production coming on stream in the Norwegian North Sea.
