NTU spin-off clinches S$4.3-million joint venture with Chinese commercial giant
S
ingapore’s water membrane technology is taking a big step in China, following the creation of a S$4.3million joint venture between Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) spinoff NanoSun Pte Ltd and the China Commerce Group for International Economic Cooperation (CCIEC) – a majority state-owned enterprise based in Beijing. The collaboration will see the NTU startup deploy its advanced membrane technology to treat industrial wastewater in the Qingdao National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, a 20-km2 industrial zone in Shandong. This joint venture is expected to act as a springboard to China’s billion-dollar industrial wastewater treatment market. As a start, the partners have taken orders to treat one million litres of wastewater from the textile industry, to be delivered by August this year. Within the next 3–4 years the partnership is expected to treat about 100 million litres of wastewater. To achieve this, it has in place a clear business strategy which is highly technology intensive, market-driven and ably supported by China’s manufacturing capabilities and supply chain. There are also plans by the partners to market the membrane products internationally in the near future. NanoSun, a two-year-old start-up, was co-founded by NTU Associate Professor Darren Sun from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Wong Ann Chai, Managing Director, NanoSun (see
Membrane Technology November 2014, page 1 and December 2014, pages 9–10). The partnership will take advantage of selfcleaning, 3D-printed membrane water filter technology developed by NanoSun, which is able to clean industrial wastewater that conventional membranes find hard to treat. The patented system is not only able to meet discharge standards, but is also suitable for water reclamation – an essential part of the strategy to encourage industries to reduce water usage by recycling. ‘What we will demonstrate at Qingdao will be an affordable, but effective technology that can turn polluted and industrial wastewater into a source of clean water, without the generation of secondary waste that other systems have. We see great potential for our innovative made-in-NTU technology to succeed in China and beyond,’ commented Professor Sun, who is the chairman of the Chemical Industries Specialty Group of the International Water Association, which advances sustainable water management. GE and Kemira form alliance
U
S-based General Electric Co (GE) and Finland’s Kemira Oyj recently announced details of a formal distribution agreement that aims to bring water technology to the pulp and paper industry. It combines GE’s advanced water technology with Kemira’s on-site services to deliver a seamless
package to the sector. GE says that for the first time its latest and most advanced boiler and utility area cooling product technologies, and membrane cleaning chemistry and the entire chemistry water portfolio, is now available to the pulp and paper industry. Akron set to be pipeline for Israeli companies entering the US market

epresentatives of Israel’s water industry, academia and private enterprises, recently joined with Don Plusquellic, mayor of Akron, Ohio, to announce that the city will be the exclusive North American government partner and location for Israel’s effort to bring cutting edge water technologies to the US market place through what is referred to as an ‘Advanced Waste Water Treatment Demonstration Project’. four other Israeli companies selected and approved by an executive committee of the partners. ‘We chose Akron because of its water industry experience, its successful business activities, its collaborative and cooperative spirit with Israel, and for the establishment of the Akron Global Water Alliance (AGWA) whose purpose is to promote innovation, knowledge sharing and commercialisation of water technologies,’ stated Moshe Kelner, CEO, Advanced Memtech, one of the Israeli companies leading the project. ‘This project will create new jobs and investment through business attraction, further our water initiative and place Akron in the forefront of water innovation and technology,’ said Mayor Plusquellic. ‘We are being entrusted with an exclusive platform and pipeline for Israeli companies to demonstrate innovative technologies and new products for water treatment worldwide.’ He also mentioned Akron’s past experience with projects in Israel, including being the first US city to partner with an Israeli municipal utility in Netanya, to develop and commer-
cialise new water technology; and creating a partnership with Mekorot to promote bilateral cooperation and innovation. Plusquellic particularly noted Akron’s US$500 000 investment in the Targetech Innovation Center, an Israeli incubator that nurtures science, technology, research and development, and commercialises these efforts in Israel and the US market through Akron. ‘These activities have positioned Akron to be the ideal partner for this project,’ noted Mayor Plusquellic. ‘This project will benefit municipal water utilities nationwide and the industry at large.
