“Growth opportunities for

We have highlighted the potential growth opportunities for wood-plastic composites a number of times in Plastics Additives & Compounding. Their use in the USA is now well established and interest in Europe and other parts of the world is now growing. The development of new plastics additives and improvements in processing equipment and techniques are proving vital in the expansion of this market. Our review of the current trends in materials and processing of wood-plastic composites starts on page 20. Batch mixing may not be considered to be at the cutting edge of technology in plastics compounding, but nevertheless it retains an important role in compounding and masterbatching operations. Indeed, there are new developments out there. Starting on page 28, our feature on batch mixing rounds-up a number of these. Continuing the mixing theme, we also take a look at the use of barrier screws in moulding and extrusion. Although barrier screws are not new, the importance of good screw design is critical in improving melting and mixing performance. Chris Rauwendaal outlines how good design of barrier screws can overcome one of the major problems associated with their use - plugging. Nanocomposites have threatened to make an impact in the plastics industry for a number of years now; we have an overall review of the current state of their commercial development coming up in the next issue of the magazine. However, there use in providing solutions in flame retardancy for plastics has always been one of the most promising avenues of research. Günter Beyer is one the world's leading experts in this field and he summarizes the current situation and predicts that new flame retardant solutions for plastics compounds will soon be available. Finally, Adam Dreiblatt highlights the importance of training in compounding. He argues that despite having the latest state-of-the-art equipment, many compounders do not make the most of their investment by not training their operators in their optimum use. It is still possible to make a new entry or amend an old one in the 2006 Plastics Additives & Compounding World Buyers' Guide. If you are a supplier to the plastics compounding industry, then visit www.addcomp.com and click on the Buyers' Guide logo and you will be directed to where you can make your entry.
