Self-priming pumps offer optimum reliability Now available from UK-based JP Pumps Ltd, a division of Johnson Pump Ab, is the FreFlow range of self-priming centrifugal pumps that are particularly suited to a wide range of applications which require the transfer of low viscosity, contaminated liquids or those containing gas or air.

Grundfos pumps receive EST accreditation Grundfos Pumps Ltd, a UK supplier of pumps and pump systems for domestic, commercial building services and process industry applications, has received Energy Savings Trust (EST) approval for three of its domestic circulators – the Alpha Pro 15-50, the Alpha Pro 15-60 and the UPS 15-50. Both of the A-rated Alpha Pro models use a permanent magnet

motor design and are capable of modulation, which makes them energy efficient, says the company. In addition, numerous internal improvements have been made to the standard domestic UPS 15-50 circulator, which have greatly improved its efficiency. These pumps offer significant energy savings compared with the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) rating for a

circulator on the all fixed speed performance curves. The Arated and B-rated circulators were judged to save 78 kWh and 52 kWh per annum respectively and qualify for EEC scheme for consideration by the Energy Suppliers. As Boiler designs improve and the technical issues of minimum flow rates diminish, further savings will be gained, says Grundfos.

FreFlow pumps are based on the injection principle, and use a semi-open or closed impeller and a mechanical seal in the oil chamber. The pumps’ selfpriming ability prevents them from running dry, ensures smooth, easy operation and avoids the use of a separate vacuum pump or other associated equipment. The design of FreFlow pumps eliminates the need for a non-return valve at the inlet – a feature that improves reliability. This, combined with a back pull-out system, inspection and cleaning cover, makes it easy to carry out maintenance work because the pump does not need to be disconnected and removed from the pipework. Other features and benefits include an oil chamber located behind the mechanical seal, which lubricates the seal faces when priming, and prevents the seal from running dry. The FreFlow range consists of 20 pumps with connections ranging from 32-150 mm, providing capacities up to 300 m3/h at heads up to 70 m. Their self-priming ability works up to 7 m, and they are suitable for handling liquids with a viscosities up to 150 mPa. The basic pump is available in cast iron or bronze, while a stainless steel version is ideal for handling aggressive and corrosive liquids.
