Among the large group which atbended the ceremony were the Governor of Styria, who presented Dr. Lieh with a signet ring showing t’he arms of Styria; Professor M. K. Zacherl, .,lcta, representing the Aust, rian Microchemical Editor of Mikrochimica Society and friend and colleague of Dr. Lieh, who presented him with the scroll of the Met.ropolitan Riicrochemical Society; Professors Navratil, Rdck, Rerendes, and Marburg, representing the Aust, rian Medical Societies; and Cand. med. W. Kollar who expressed t’he feelings of the student body. The celchrat, ion closed with a formal dinner attended by two hundred pcoplc at the Hotel Steirerhof, well remembered by the American participants of t’ht: First Internat~ional Microchemical Congress in 1950. Professor Hans Lien was horn *July 20, 1887 in Wciz, province of Styria, I\ustria. He st,udied at the University of Graq receiving his 17:j

doctorate in 1912. He became assistant to Professor Scholl in 1913 and was assistant to Professor Pregl from 1913 to 1931. III addition to his degree in Organic Chemistry, he obtained a medical degree from the University in 1920. In 1921 he became l’rivatdozent in Medical Chemistry, and in 1924 Professor Extraordinary in Biochemistry. In 1930 Dr. Lieb was appointed provisional head of the I’regl Institute, and in 1941 he became full professor and dire&or of the Professor Lieb is an honorary member of the MetroInstitute. politan Microchemical Societ’y, President of the Austrian Mirrochemical Society, a member of the American Chemical Society and of numerous 0Qier scientific groups. He has held posts in the highest, medical commissions of Austria for the periods of 1931 t#o 1938 and 1949 to 1952, and is the recipient of the Fritz l’regl prize and the Wilhelm Exner medal. He has served several times as Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Graz. The readers of this Journal recognize Dr. Hans Lieb as the foremost research associate of Fritz Pregl during the development’ of the elegant met’hods of organic elementary microanalysis and the fait’hful administ’rator of Pregl’s heritage at the Institute of Medical Chemistry at the Universit,y of Graz. In continuing the I’regl heritage, J,ieb extended t,he application of micromet’hods in the fields of caliniral and forensic chemistry; he extended t,he application of mirromethods to the determination of elements other than carbon, Special mention of his contribut8ions must hydrogen, and nitrogen. include the determination of phosphorus and arsenic, and t’he applications of micromethods to the determination of aretyl, alkoxy, and alkimide furwtional groups. Of special interest also are his investigations on the effect of the dimensions and shape of the inlet tubes upon the weight constancy of the absorption tubes in carbon and hydrogen determinations, and the development of a simple micromethod for the determination of carbon by wet combustion. Professor Lieb will still be the director of the Pregl Institute of Graz during the academic year 1957-58, and it is hoped t’hat rnany microchemists will take the opportunity to visit him and t’he laboratories of the Institute. The Metropolitan Microchemical Society sends its heartiest greetings to its fellow member, Professor Hans Lieb, in honor of t#his occasron.
