Materials Research Corp have expanded its Superstrate line, formerly limited to premium grade thin film applications. The new substrate, Superstrate 960, is a 96% alumina, designed specifically for premium quality thick film hybrid circuits. The principal features of the substrate are :- Fine grain : 1.5-2.5pm; Consistent density : 3.74-3.77 g/cm3 ; Fine surface finish : (10 microinches CLA ( ~0.3 pm) ; Superior flatness: 0.003 inches/inch. The new Superstrate 960 permits the use of thick and thin film hybrid circuits on the same substrate; finer circuit lines, up to the limit of the most advanced thick film pastes; lighter and more consistent resistivity yields, and higher overall yields. Within two days of receiving the initial enquiry from Oman about this tanker-from buyers who had an urgent need but no previous experience of buying vacuum tankers-all essential specification details had been submitted by telex with a quotation, and the order had been agreed. Only 4 weeks later, (9,000 I) tank was signwritten, tested fitted with a Drum and 4 in (100 mm)

jetter

Designed as both sewer jetter and cesspool emptier, a new combined vehicle from Whale Tankers Ltd not only carries out the functions of both types of tanker, but serves as both at once. Sewer sludge is drawn in by vacuum as it is loosened by the drain cleaning nozzle supplied with water under pressure from a separate compartment. The first Jetvac, as the new unit is known, for the Isle of Anglesey Borough Council.

The tank of the Jetvac is built in two compartments, and when operating as a cesspool emptier, the rear section-the bigger of the two-may be filled and emptied in the normal way. When in use sewer jetting, the forward compartment is filled with clean water from a hydrant through a non-siphoning valve. Pressure delivery for the drain cleaning nozzle is provided by a Monomat piston-type pump delivering 20 gal min-1 at 1,000 psi (90 I min-1 at 70 kg/cmz) through a 300 ft (90 m) length of high pressure hose. A hydraulic hose reel is fitted as standard equipment. The volume and pressure generated are adequate for propulsion of the drain cleining nozzle and for the thorough cleaning of sewer pipes. GE(USA)‘s material specification service taps an information source developed over the past 40 years at a cost of millions of dollars. In its present form, it comprises more than 9,000 pages of detailed specifications, continuously updated by a team of experienced materials engineers, and includes information on more than 1 O,OOO,OOO machine parts, 13,000 raw materials, and 1,000 finishes and test methods. Each material covered by the new service is listed on a specification sheet, and encompasses such items as properties, referee methods to determine if specifications are met, testing parameters, sizes, tolerances, and packing and marking information. A master index contains numerical, subject, common, and trade name indices, and cross references to other materials coding systems. In addition many GE(USA) specifications are shown in relation to those of the American Society for Testing and Materials and other groups. GE(USA)‘s Suppliers Material Specification Service is divided into four material-specification categories. Subscribers may select the entire service or may target areas of specific interest by electing to receive one or more of the categories. The entire specification system was recently converted to microfiche for economy, ease of storage, and accessibility. Category I, consisting of more than 2,500 pages on 27 microfiche. includes nonmetallic materials, chemicals, and test methods. Category II includes some 1,980 pages on 20 microfiche covering ferrous metals. Category Ill-3,200 pages on 34 microfiche-contains specifications on nonferrous metals. Category IV encompasses 1.950 pages on 19 microfiche and includes information about machine parts and finishes. The complete set of all four categories is contained on 96 microfiche.
