POWER GENERATION SRI LANKAN POWER SECTOR RECEIVES US$130 MILLION LOAN The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved two loans totalling the equivalent of US$130 million to fund new distribution lines and connections in rural Sri Lanka, as well as improve the existing network. A project loan of US$70 million equivalent will be used to finance 600 rural electrification projects all over the country; provide or expand power supply in 820 villages housing 112 500 consumers; and strengthen Ceylon Electricity Board’s distribution networks and provide transmission lines and substations. The project is due for completion by December 2006.

POLAND GRANTED 30M FOR POWER PLANT The European Investment Bank has provided a 30 million loan for a project to modernize a combined heat and power plant supplying steam and electricity to Frantschach Swiecie SA, Poland’s second largest pulp and paper producer. The loan will fund the construction of a new fluidized bed boiler, which will use biomass and coal as a fuel. Other components of the project, which forms a critical part of a larger overhaul of the existing paper mill with state of the art technology, are the overhaul of existing coal-fired boilers and the upgrade of electricity generation equipment. The promoters of the project are Frantschach Swiecie SA, controlled by Austrian

Frantschach AG paper Group and Polish Energy Partners SA., an independent power producer specializing in the development of combined heat and power plants.

FW AWARDED COGENERATION PLANT ORDER Foster Wheeler Italiana SpA has secured a US$113 million contract from Voghera Energia Srl for a grassroots combined-cycle cogeneration plant to be built at Voghera, near Pavia, Italy. The natural-gas-fired power station consists of a single-shaft gas turbine and steam turbine generator, heat recovery steam generator and balance of plant facilities. FW will provide engineering, material supply, construction, coordination of pre-commissioning, commissioning and testing for the turnkey plant. Operation is scheduled to begin at the end of 2004.

HYUNDAI WINS CONTRACT FOR DIESEL POWER PLANT Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has received a US$60 million turnkey order from Barbados Light and Power Company (BLPC) in Barbados for construction of a 60-MW diesel power plant. HHI will perform all work related to the construction, such as installation and testruns, as well as engineering work and machinery material manufacturing. Completion is expected by September 2004.

VA TECH’S COOLKEERAGH PROJECT GETS GREEN LIGHT A consortium comprising VA Tech Hydro, Combined Cycle and General Electric

has been awarded a contract valued at 180 million by Coolkeeragh ESB to build a new combined cycle power plant near Londonderry in Northern Ireland. Work will entail engineering of the entire plant, the manufacture and installation of a gas turbine, a steam turbine, a heat recovery generator, associated civil works and all ancillary plant works and services. The new plant is expected to become fully operational in early 2005.

CHEMICALS FW WINS MAJOR CHINESE CONTRACT Foster Wheeler Ltd’s UK subsidiary has won the contract for the front-end loading and engineering package (FEEP) development for a world-scale integrated isocyanates complex in China. The complex, with a total investment value in the region of US$1 billion, will be built on the Shanghai Chemical Industries Park (SCIP), Caojing, Shanghai. The plant is scheduled for commercial operation in 2006. BASF AG, Huntsman International LLC and four Chinese investors are combining in three project joint ventures to build the complex, which has three main elements: an integrated nitrobenzene, aniline and crude diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) plant, an MDI purification and pre-polymers plant, and an MDI purification and pre-polymers plant combined with a toluene diisocyanate plant with precursors (nitric acid and dinitrotoluene). The contract, to be completed in June 2003, was awarded by BASF and Huntsman and is valued at around US$15.5 million to FW.
