In Memory of Martin Bergmann (NRCan) Polar Continental Shelf Program. Marty perished on August 20, 2011 in the crash of First Air flight 6560 in Resolute, Nunavut. Prior to working with NRCan, Marty was the director of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Canadian National Centre of Arctic Aquatic Research Excellence at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, MB. It was during this time that Marty forged partnerships between the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and NRCan to plan and secure funding for a research program in Canada's Beaufort Sea in support of the Government of Canada's Northern Oil and Gas Research Program. Marty worked tirelessly with central agencies and the Canadian Coast Guard to acquire and convert the CCGS Nahidik from a retired aide to navigation vessel to a dedicated multi-disciplinary research vessel capable of working in the shallow waters of the Canadian Beaufort Sea. Marty built a strong research team through collaborations with academia, national and international science institutions, and federal researchers within DFO and NRCan. In typical Marty fashion, he took great pleasure in hopping on board the Nahidik for a few hours when he was in the western arctic to share his enthusiasm for arctic research and listen to the experiences of the various researchers. Marty placed emphasis on ensuring that the research directly involved participation by and reflected the science priorities of northerners and their co-management bodies. He also placed a high priority on reporting science findings back to community members, who rely on the natural resources of the Beaufort Sea, by conducting annual community tours. The arctic science community has lost a visionary, a leader, a mentor and a friend.

1956–2011 We dedicate this Beaufort Sea Nahidik Special Issue to the memory of Martin (Marty) Bergmann, director of Natural Resources Canada's
