These two volumes are essentially the text of courses given at the University of Nottingham under the auspices of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. They are an excellent introduction to the subject. Clear and authoritative papers deal with all the major problems of water resources and pollution, sewage and other wastes, air pollution and noise. Useful appendices in each volume summarise the legal situation in Great Britain. These books are well presented and should be valuable to students at many levels, and also to specialists who wish to familiarise themselves with other branches of pollution treatment and control.

Lead Pollution, Causes and Control. By R. M. Harrison and D. P. H. Laxen. Chapman and Hall, London and New York. 1981. Pp. 168. ISBN 0 412 16360 8. Price: £9.50.

There have recently been many books on lead and its environmental effects. This is certainly one of the best. The authors attempt to set out the facts about the levels of lead in the atmosphere, in water and in food. They discuss the uptake and metabolism, blood levels and the effects on health. They do not propagandise on behalf of either the pro- or anti-lead lobbies. K.M. 313 A. (28) (1982)--© Applied Science Publishers Ltd, England, 1982 Printed in Great Britain
