Pumps benefit from Kalrez O-rings Hilge-Pumpen AG, a Swiss subsidiary of Philipp-Hilge GmbH of Bodenheim, Germany, has selected DuPont Dow Elastomers’ Kalrez 6221 perfluoroelastomer parts to seal its Euro-Hygia, Hygiana-HT and Contra pump series.

The company is using the seals to help it meet stringent safety, cleanliness, sterilization, chemical resistance and seal life requirements that are demanded by the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and cosmetics industries. Pumps that are used in pharmaceutical, biotechnological and sterile processes are subject to the highest standards and safety requirements worldwide. In addition to ease of operation they must also provide maximum biological safety without any unfavourable hydraulic characteristics that could adversely influence sensitive products. Strict compliance is required, with standards set, for example, by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In Europe, the draft ‘DIN EN 12462 Biotechnology’ sets out performance criteria for pumps in terms of cleanability and sterilization, leakage, materials and their surfaces, and design details in relation to cleaning in place (CIP) and sterilization in place (SIP) capabilities. This means that pump and process engineers must take special care in selecting appropriate sealing materials. In addition to hygienic installation and production requirements, they must consider expected sealing life, chemical resistance, CIP and SIP capabilities, and FDA compliance status. DuPont Dow says that Kalrez 6221 perfluoroelastomer parts comply with FDA requirements for repeated use in food contact applications, and meet stringent requirements for pharmaceutical and high-purity chemical applications. These parts are specified to reduce the risk of leakage of chemicals and ultra-pure water that is used, for example, during CIP and SIP procedures at temperatures up to 160°C. Furthermore, Kalrez combines good sealing properties of a perfluoroelastomer with the inertness and purity of polytetrafluoroethylene, to create an effective system for processes that require minimal contamination, and an extended sealing service life. Kalrez 6221 is marketed as white O-rings and slabs, but parts also can be produced to customer specifications.

Self-sealing valve prevents backflow US-based Bio-Chem Valve Inc has developed a non-metallic, self-sealing in-line check valve for handling low-volume, lowflow transfers. Called the Bio-Chek, this inert valve prevents unintended liquid back-flow in high purity, low pressure fluid transfer applications, and it features an even flow path that reduces passage complications, says the company. The zero-maintenance valve is available in an inlet or outlet configuration, and applications include syringe pump systems, vacuum systems and other lowflow processes. Unlike a spring-actuated check valve, which can impede or restrict the flow path, the company says that Bio-Chek’s flow path is less tortuous and minimizes shear and turbulence. It provides a flow rate that is equivalent to a 0.76 mm orifice, a cracking pressure of less than 0.24 bar (3.5 psi), and checks against back-flow pressure to 6.89 bar (100 psi). Bio-Chem offers manufacturers of scientific and medical equipment a variety of materials for the valve’s check element, including ethylene-propylene terpolymer rubber, Viton and Chemraz. Polyetheretherketone and polyphenylene sulfide are also offered as housing materials. For more information, contact: Bio-Chem Valve Inc, 85 Fulton Street, Boonton, NJ 07005, USA.
