MICROMERITICSof Norcross, Georgia, USA, has added to its range of porosimetry equipment for the powder metallurgy (PM) industry. The ‘Accelerated Surface Area and Porosimetry (ASAP) 2045’ analyzer is completely automated and features high sample throughput with multiple sample ports. The standard ASAP 2045 system uses nitrogen as the adsorbate for measuring surface areas and performing full adsorption and desorption isotherms of up to six samples. The low surface area option adds krypton as an adsorbate to measure surface areas of 5 m2 or less for up to five samples sequentially. The krypton option features a molecular drag pump, which provides the high vacuum required for krypton analyses, and a 10 mm Hg pressure transducer, which allows accurate, repeatable pressure

resolution of 0.0005 mm Hg. Patented isothermal jackets achieve precise control of free space and liquid nitrogen levels for added accuracy and reproducibility. Micromerltics has also released the ‘AutoPore III 9420’, a mercury porosimeter featuring four low pressure and two high pressure ports. A new pressure system and A/D converter permit resolution of pore size and volume data at a precision of 0.1 pl or better. Quick scanning or equilibration modes can be used to determine pore size distributions ranging from 360 to 0.003 urn in diameter. A computer programme allows recalibration of the data acquisition system using proper reference devices and a simplified procedure compatible with IS0 9001 standards. GERMAN metal powder producer Norddeutsche Aanerie (NA) of Hamburg, Germany, has been awarded its DIN/ IS0 9002 certificate. The certificate covers all of the company’s activities from the awareness of the importance of quality at management level, to process control and the training of employees. In addition to its range of copper and copper-based powder, NA produces copper cathodes, continuous cast copper wire rod and continuous cast shapes. The company’s production programme also includes refined lead, metal salts and oxides, and precious metals.

NA has a long running commitment to quality control and assurance. In the 1970s it introduced an extensive quality assurance system which, in collaboration with its customers, has been continually reviewed and improved ever since. In order to also be able to fulfil customers’ demands regarding the safety and reliability of metal powders, NA decided to have its quality management system documented in accordance with DIN/IS0 9002 (EN 29002). Its efforts were certiEed by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance. Norddeutsche Affinerie; •t 44-40-78830; tel: fu: + 44-40-78832255.

Accountant steals from Stackpole

MPIF to joint/y sponsor materials meetings

STACKPOLE Ltd, a Toronto, Canada, based manufacturer of metal powder components, has been defrauded by one of its employees. The company says it has discovered a “cash shortfall...resulting from the misconduct of a mid-level accounting manager.” The Globe and Mail, a Toronto newspaper, reports that the amount missing is less than $1 million and will be replaced by the company’s parent, Stackpole Corp of Boston, Massachusetts, USA It is believed that the funds were taken sometime between September and November 1994, but an employee’s bank records are being examined going back several years. Lonza brochure SYNTHETICgraphite producer Lonza G+T of Sins, Switzerland, has released a colour brochure outlining its products for powder metallurgy (PM). The brochure outlines the grade of graphite best suited to specific areas of PM, including ferrous-based parts, copper/bronze bearings, hard materials and high speed steels. THE Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPH’) is joining forces with two other major materials societies to present a series of concurrent, co-located meetings in Anaheim, California, USA from 8-11 May, 1995. The MPIF has combined with ASM International and the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) to schedule three meetings during the four day period. The meetings comprise MPIF’s ‘4th International Conference on Powder Metallurgy in Aerospace, Defence and Demanding Applications (ADDA)‘; ASM’s ‘6th Advanced Aerospace Materials & Processes Conference (AeroMat) ’ and the ‘40th International SAMPE Symposium and Exhibition’. More than 450 technical presentations will be made at the three events. The partnership means that delegates at one meeting can attend sessions of another event for a small additional fee. The exhibition, to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center, will feature nearly 300 AeroMat and SAMPE exhibitors. Metal Powder Industries FeoWation; tel: + 1-609-4527700; fw: + 1-609-987-8523.
