Analyser gives quantitative value for mechanical wear Quantitative measurement of mechanical wear in a variety of lubricated machines is provided by the Model 56 Wear Particle Analyser introduced by Tribometrics Inc of Berkeley, CA, USA. Intended for use by those who analyse spent oil for preventative maintenance purposes or for tribological laboratory studies, the Model 56 magnetically captures micron-sized ferromagnetic particles worn from cast iron and steel. It physically captures non-magnetic particles 10/~m and larger from metals such as aluminium, bronze, copper and babbitt.

Tractor manufacturer J. "I. Case Europe Lid has installed 35 Filtermist units to combat air pollution into its two factories at Doncaster, UK. Shown here is one of 28 Filtermist self-cleaning filtration systems fitted to a gear cutting machine. Removal of the oil mist generated by the gear cutting oil eliminates operator health hazards, reduces cleaning costs and enables expensive oils to be reclaimed. Low-friction piston design wins award A low-friction piston design has won a 1989 British Design Award in the motor industry category for T & N Technology Ltd of Rugby. The AEconoguide piston resulted from a desire to reduce piston friction by substantially reducing the skirt bearing area, whilst maintaining effective lubrication. Frictional losses represent 10-20% of the power output when an engine is idling, falling to 2-4% at high power. Thus, if fr~ctional losses were halved, power output and therefore overall efficiency would be increased by 1-10% depending on operating conditions. Tests on gasoline and diesel engines showed the feasibility of reducing losses due to friction by reducing the skirt area. Typical results from in-house and customer tests on AEconoguide pistons showed a

general reduction in piston skirt friction of between one-third and one-half.

To operate, a small sample of oil is drawn through one of Tribometrics' Firon magnetic filters. Different filters are used to preferentially capture particles larger than a selected size and to handle fluids of different viscosities. The amount of magnetic material captured is displayed in mg on an analogue or digital readout. The reusable filter is then back-washed to remove the captured magnetic and non-magnetic particles for microscopic and other analyses. Robert T. Lewis, President, Tribometrics Inc, 2475 4th Street, Berkeley, CA 94710, USA.
