COMPANY STRATEGIES Masterbatch producers form global alliance Chroma Corporation of the USA, Lifocolor Farben GmbH of Germany, Cromex Brancolor Ltda of Brazil and Panacea Polymers (PTY) Ltd are collaborating to form the International Colour Alliance. The partners say that the venture aims to meet the growing demand for global colorant solutions. They believe the alliance will allow an exchange of processing know-how and formulations and provide the same wide product range and high technical standards for customers on both sides of the Atlantic. Chroma Corporation, established in 1967, has three manufacturing sites in Illinois serving the North American market, while Cromex Brancolor supplies the South American market and has three production units in Brazil. Lifocolor Farben was founded in 1978 and supplies the European and selected overseas markets from production sites in Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Poland and South Africa. Panacea Polymers is active in the African market. The companies say that they will be able to offer reliable consistent colour and additive masterbatches from local production bases in North and South America, Europe and South Africa. They offer dispersions and custom formulations in pellet and liquid concentrates for polyolefins and engineering thermoplastics. According to the alliance partners, there will be a global database of over 50 000 colours on file and development capacity for the formulation of over 200 new colours per month. Titanium dioxide producers announce price increases Millennium Chemicals and Kerr-McGee Chemical have both announced that they are to increase prices for their titanium dioxide (TiO,) products, effective from 1 March 2002. Millennium says it is raising prices on TiO, products sold to all end-use markets across the world. In the USA prices will rise by US$O.OS per pound and in Canada by C$O. 10 per pound. In Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa the increase is El50 per tonne. In both the Asia/Pacific and Latin American regions prices will rise by US$lOO per tonne, in Brazil by US$SO/tonne and in Australia by AUS$l50/tonne. The company says the increases are necessary in order to restore margins, which have become unacceptably poor after more than a year of rapid and excessive decreases in all world areas. Almost concurrently with the Millennium announcement came a similar one from KerrMcGee Chemical LLC and its affiliates concerning increases in prices for Tronox@ TiO, pigments.
