by H. J. EmelGus and A. G. Sharpe, Rout4th ed., 1973, XV + 667 pp, price E5.25.
This is the fourth edition of a book first published in 1938 and in its day a pillar for inorganic teaching. The same general approach is used -the reviewing of selected topicsalthough the range of subjects included in this edition has been extended. Introductory chapters on the applications of isotopes and physical methods in inorganic chemistry are followed by sections on structures and energetics of ionic crystals and inorganic molecules, and on defect structures. Then come reviews on aqueous and non-aqueous chemistry, hydrogen and hydrides, inorganic polymers, non-metallic halides, and peroxides and peroxy-acids. The reviews of transition metal chemistry include discussions on bonding, structure, magnetic properties, electronic spectra, reaction mechanisms, carbonyls and organometallic compounds. The text is completed with chapters on the lanthanides and actinides. This style of book must inevitably fall between the rather superficial standard of a comprehensive textbook and the detail of a specialized review. This is perhaps its weakness, yet also its strength. Its weakness, in that the choice of what are important modern aspects of inorganic chemistry must be a personal one, and inevitably in every reader’s eyes there will be obvious gaps. Its strength, in that sufficient coverage for Honours Degree students is given, without the forbidding detail present in so many reviews. Overall, the book is well written with few obvious mistakes and should find a ready place in most libraries. Glasgow
