IN MEMORIAM Joan Faller Koehler, RN AORN Past-President Joan Koehler, national President of AORN from 1983 to 1984, passed away February 22, 2010, in Phoenix, Arizona. During her career, she worked as a surgical nurse for Fifth Avenue Gynecologists and created and operated Perioperative Plus Associates, a nursing education company. Koehler joined AORN in 1972. Nathan L. Belkin, PhD Long-time AORN Journal contributor Dr Nathan L. Belkin, founder of the American Reusable Textile Association (ARTA), passed away February 22, 2010, in Largo, Florida. Dr Belkin published more than 200 articles in clinical and trade journals, including more than 30 in the AORN Journal between 1966 and 2009. He frequently wrote about the use of barrier materials in the OR, instrument sterilization, and instrument

national committees. She was actively involved in developing certification for perioperative nurses and was chair of the Certification Board from 1979 to 1980. In 1980, she was elected to the AORN Board of Directors, and she became President-elect in 1982. In a 1983 AORN Journal article, Koehler described her feelings for the OR as “love at first sight.” One of her priorities during her tenure as President was to continue AORN’s investment in research. “It is apparent that to establish the credibility of our practice we need to invest in research,” she said.

1965. She was a reference librarian and chief of library services at the Denver Veterans Administration Hospital until her retirement in 1987. After retiring, she formed Med-Info Search, an information brokering firm, and volunteered for 20 more years as a reference librarian at the Denison Memorial Library and the Health Sciences Library in Denver. Gilbert passed away November 17, 2009, in Denver.

Dr Belkin worked in the textile services industry for 40 years. He founded ARTA in 1982 in response to legislation that, if passed, would have given a substantial advantage to disposable products over reusable textiles. Dr Belkin moved to Largo in 1979 and retired in 1991. He was also a World War II veteran who received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service.
