NeuroImage Anniversary Issue

Neuroscience is the link between the sciences and the humanities. Neuroimaging has been and still is one of the most important tools available to study the brain in vivo. Modern neuroimaging began with the advent of tomographic techniques such as computerized tomography. Since then, a myriad of other methods have been applied to the field in order to study the structure and function of the human and non-human brain in health and disease. In August of 1992 the inaugural issue of NeuroImage was published. The editor in chief was Arthur W. Toga, Ph.D. In the inaugural editorial it was noted that imaging was one of the fastest growing fields in neuroscience. Even then the journal was looking forward. The initial set of six articles included one on the fractal analysis of cell types, an “Anatomical mapping of functional activation in stereotactic coordinant space” and “Programs for visualization in threedimensional microscopy.” In 1995, and for the ten years that followed, Richard Frackowiak and John Mazziotta joined Toga and became co-editors in chiefs of the journal. Since then a group of very talented editors has taken the helm and steered the journal to the prominence that it has achieved today. Always working with strong editorial boards and a very generous group of manuscript reviewers, the journal has flourished and become the preeminent source of new knowledge about brain structure and function derived from imaging studies and the methods associated with them. The cover of the inaugural issue shows a section through the lower brain stem of the squirrel monkey. Over the years much

time and effort was devoted to cover imagery that not only depicted the state of the field but that also had some of the most dramatic images of the brain ever produced. Arthur Toga was particularly dedicated to the selection of cover art and subsequent editors have provided the same meticulous attention to detail about this aspect of the journal. Elsevier has been the journal publisher since its inception. The strong working relationship between all of the editors and the publisher has been another element in the success of NeuroImage. Now, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the journal, we felt it would only be fitting to take stock of the field, all the important and unexpected achievements, insights and breakthroughs that have been published in the journal and to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in its establishment and growth. We thank all the authors who contributed to this volume and we hope you enjoy this 20th anniversary edition.
