New automatic distillation apparatus The Auto-Four is claimed to be a sophisticated, up-to-the-minute horizontal, totally enclosed water still with special safety features. For example, the glasswork of the still is completely protected, an important point in Laboratories; there is an automatic switch-off, of power and water supply when the distillate receiver is full and a thermostat protects the heater boiler and elements. This still produces an ultra high purity, pyrogen free distillate, with a conductivity reading of 1 -micromho/cm at 4-L/h and it replaces, automatically, any distillate taken from the storage reservoir. The Autostill GP-6 is designed for general purpose use for those who need a high purity water without the ultra high purities of the Auto-Four. It produces 6 I. of distillate per h with a 2-4 micromho/cm conductivity. A feature of the GP-6 is the stainless steel boiler which replaces the normal glass boiler. Jencons (Scientific) Ltd. High rate sputter deposition system The VTA Model 7370 System is said to be a completely self contained high rate sputter deposition unit. It includes a diffusion pumped chamber with gauging, built-in power supplies, 6 in. target electrode and jigging. This unit uses a new (Pat Pending) concept of dc sputtering with high ionization efficiency that produces very high sputtering rates for conductors plus cold deposition. Typical sputter rates for copper are 18,000 A/min. Rates for other conductors can be predicted from Wehner’s sputter yield tables. Cold Coater The “Cold Coater” is a completely self contained table top system for SEM sample coating. It features a new cold, high rate sputtering source that can be used with heat sensitive samples such as biologicals, polymers and similar problem materials. Operation is simple and fast. A typical processing cycle would 5 min. The deposition time is measured in seconds to deposit 500-l 000 A of gold, platinum, tungsten, nickel, chromium, copper or other similar conductors.

An accessory sample rotator with variable tilt is available for samples requiring extra care to avoid any shadowing. Specifications quoted are as follows: typical processing time, 5 min or less from a cold start. Vacuum system, direct drive mechanical pump with isolation mounting and 1 x 10-4 torr ultimate; metallic absorbent pump trap is included to avoid sample contamination from backstreaming pump oils that occurs in competitive systems. Vacuum gauging, O-100 mtorr thermocouple for optimum pressure measurement. Sputter source, very high rate co/d sputter source complete with metered power supply that is fully variable and breaker controlled from the front panel. Uses three (3) in. diameter targets for larger sample loads. Typical sputter rate for copper or gold is about 15,000 A/n-.in. Sample holder, suspended from top plate; height (spacing) adjustable; drilled for holder specified by user. Chamber, 8-in. diam x 6-in. height; Pyrex. Gas control, precision micrometer leak valve to provide uniform inert gas control to chamber. Main and vent valves, high vacuum type main valve for chamber isolation and throttling plus a chamber vent valve are provided. Coated area, the sputter source will coat areas up to three (3) in. in diameter. Thus, up to 1 O-l 2 SEM samples can be coated at one time. Sample type, the cold sputter source may be used to coat heat sensitive samples such as polymers and biologicals that are difficult to process in conventional dc sputtering systems or in evaporators. It may also be used with any other type SEM sample. Input power, 110 VAC/60 Hz. Cabinet dimensions, 22W x 21 H x 16D. Services required, inert sputtering gas (inlet connector supplied) ; 110 VAC power. Vacuum Technology Associates Circle number 34 on Reader Enquiry Service card
Special thermocouple amplifier cuts cost by 40 per cent To provide direct temperature read-out from most thermocouples it is necessary to amplify the primary signal and this is usually done by means of a non-inverting chopper amplifier. Such chopper amplifiers-of which Ancom manufacture a wide range-are designed for a great many uses and to give exceptional stability under widely varying input conditions; typically as low as 0.05 PV per degree with less than 100 pA offset current or-notably for thermocouples-as high as 5 PV per degree and 5 nA offset current. Ancom believe that the market for thermocouple amplifiers is such as to justify a purpose-designed module which, because of its known band of source impedance and narrower specification, can be just as stable in performance, but manufactured much more cheaply. The new 15 TC-1 is, therefore, a non-inverting chopper amplifier suitable for all thermocouples producing a minimum 5 pV/“C which can be used either for direct amplification-having regard to the non-linearity of thermocouple output-or in conjunction with any of the Ancom function generator “linearizors” with automatic or fixed cold-junction compensation. Ancom stress that quality and long-term stability are in no way diminished in the lower-cost specification for the 15 TC-1.
