Additives for Polymers

MATERIALS Chemson launches organic-based stabilisers Chemson-Group of Arnoldstein, Austria, has launched what it describes as a new generation of additives for polyvinyl chloride, referred to as organic-based stabilisers. Using license technology from German company Crompton Vinyl Additives GmbH, it says that it is now able to expand its Naftosafe product range with the addition of a new family of stabiliser/lubricant one-packs which are based on ‘heavy-metal-free’ technology. Polyurethane elastomer protects HVAC systems Coatings of MAGNA-Coat Industrial Georgetown, Texas, USA, says that it has developed a cost-effective way of protecting heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems’ ‘cooling towers’ from corrosion. The company claims that it can greatly extend their service-life by spraying internal surfaces with elastomeric polyurethane materials from Bayer Corp. Cooling towers can corrode prematurely, and according to MAGNA-Coat, attempts to protect them have been met with mixed results. This is partly because the linings which were used had difficulty withstanding harsh conditions inside the tower, and adhering to surfaces for extended periods. The company says that it experimented with several polyurethane products, surface preparation techniques and spraying conditions, but finally adopted the Baytec SPR polyurethane spray elastomer system from Bayer’s Polyurethanes Division. With a shore hardness of at least %A, and added ultraviolet (UV) stabilisers, the ‘system’ is used in spray applications to improve the corrosion,

weather-resistance and abrasion-resistance of metal, concrete, wood and plastic materials. Typical uses include protective layers for industrial surfaces, and tanks. New chemical blowing agents now available from Tramaco Now available from German company Tramaco GmbH is a new range of blowing agents in both a powder and granule form. Called SCB types, the products in the range are free-flowing, nondusting, coated agglomerates and, says the comwere developed panx especially for the foam-extrusion of polyvinyl chloride PVC sheets, pipes and profiles. The SCB products are efficient and have a low sensitivity to moisture, heat and PVC stabilisers. They can be blended hot or cool, and they also can be directly ‘dosed in an extruder. New formulations of base blowing-agent can be produced in addition to the standard ones, says Tramaco. For example, blowing-agent compositions with a decomposition temp erature of about 100°C have been developed for foaming polyethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA).
