Seal supplier receives gold award for fuel cell sealing innovation German-based Reinz-DichtungsGmbH has received the 2004 Gold f-cell award. The award has been presented since 2001 for application-oriented developments in innovative fuel cell technology. The award is presented by the Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH, a company which encourages economic development in the Stuttgart area, on the occasion of the annual fuel cell conference known as ‘f-cell’. The integrated bipolar plate module developed by Reinz won the competition this year. The development of the integrated sealing function for the bipolar plate is seen as a major step towards future series production. This innovation makes it possible to come much closer to the cost targets necessary for mass production of fuel cells, and it also offers a decisive weight advantage.

The European Fuel Cell Support Center (EFCSC) operated by Reinz is part of a network of four additional fuel cell development centers within Dana Corporation. Contact: Reinz-Dichtungs-GmbH, Reinzstrasse 3–7, D-89233 Neu-Ulm, Germany. Tel: +49 731 70460, Fax: +49 731 719089, Web: www.reinz.com

John Crane has recently integrating a Mazak Milling Machining Center Integrex e-410H into the Type 28 Group at its Morton Grove facility in Illinois. The new machine enables multitasking and more efficient processes by combining four separate machining functions – rough turn, finish turn, and two milling operations. It is capable of serving as a machining and turning center combined, allowing the Type 28 product line to be turned and milled in one program. The ability to quickly and easily go from a single set-up to completed machined parts will help the company to minimize inventory. In addition to condensing steps and increasing capacity, significant savings can be achieved in set-up time. The magazine tool for the Mazak holds 160 tools, and all programs are loaded into the processor off-line, which means that most seal components can be manufactured without having to load any tools. In addition, the machine is fitted with a Renishaw inspection probe, avoiding the requirement to take the part off the

machine for detailed measurement. The company is beginning to experiment with using the probe as a means to measure thermal effects, which it anticipates will improve the ability to manufacture to tight tolerance dimensions.
