Nursing Care in Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders, 4th ed. Saunders, William H; Havener, William H; Keith, Carol Fair; Havener, Gail. C V Mosby Co, 11830 Westline Industrial Dr, St Louis, Mo 63141, 1979, 520 pp, $16.95. This is a revised edition of an excellent basic nursing text that presents the anatomy, pathophysiology, and treatment of eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) disorders. The format and readability have been improved by use of larger print and bold subtitles and 29 new illustrations. The book is divided into two sections. The first, on the patient with eye disorders, contains not only chapters on specific ophthalmologic problems, but also chapters on history taking, clinical examination, assessment and management of the eye patient, prevention of blindness, and common ophthalmological misconceptions. The chapter that relates eye symptoms to specific anatomic location of eye structures is particularly informative and helpful to the nurse involved in patient assessment. A chapter on medical ophthalmology has been added. It describes the relationship between eye changes and systemic diseases, including diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders, hypertension, collagen diseases, blood dyscrasias, rheumatic disorders, infections, dermatologic problems, and toxic reactions. The second section is on the patient with ear, nose, and throat disorders. It includes chapters relating the assessment, pathophysiology, and both the medical and surgical treatment of conditions involving the oral cavity, salivary glands, pharynx, nose, sinuses, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and the ear. This section also presents informationon hear-

ing impairment, disturbances of the vestibular system of the inner ear, and an excellent description of Meniere’s disease. Additional features of the book include glossaries of EENT terms, a thorough index, and updated suggested additional readings at the end of each chapter. This book is intended to be basic and does not provide the indepth information required for the nurse specializing in ophthalmologic or otolaryngologic nursing, but it would be valuable for the OR library.
