Obituary Jens G. Rosenkrantz, MD

ENS Georg "Jim" Rosenkrantz was born in Elsi-

nore, Denmark on August 10, 1929, and died in JBoston, Mass on June 10, 1985, while undergoing treatment at the Massachusetts General Hospital for advanced malignancy. He had just recovered from a 3-year struggle with hepatitis and his death from lung cancer occurred only 2 weeks following the first symptoms. The brilliant career of this talented pediatric surgeon began at an early age when his mother, a physician described by one of her classmates as "the most beautiful lady he had ever met," frequently brought Jim as an infant with her when she attended medical school classes in Cincinnati. years at St Marks School in Southborough, Mass, he graduated from Yale in 1949, then from Harvard Medical School in 1953. He completed a surgical residency and thoracic surgical residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1961, then went on to complete a residency in pediatric surgery at Boston Children's Hospital under the famed Robert E. Gross. His academic honors included Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Alpha Omega Alpha. Jim was stationed in Newfoundland (1956 to 1958) in the Navy, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He then moved to a position at the University of Colorado as Assistant Professor, then Associate Professor of Surgery and Physiology. In 1969, he was selected to be Professor of Surgery at the University of Southern California and Surgeon-in-Chief at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. In 1974, he resigned this position to become Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati and Associate Director of Pediatric Surgery at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital. During his 11 years in Cincinnati, he was an ideal associate, a great help with administrative matters, and was meticulously supportive of the house staff. He was kind and considerate, yet an excellent teacher. Jim contributed many scientific publications on a wide variety of pediatric surgical subjects but his major research was in the field of pseudo-random noise as a means of describing and measuring a vascular system's impulse response. This complicated work can be understood only by one with a thorough knowledge of computer mathematics and physics as well as medicine. His many honors include Chairman of the Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics, President of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, as well as membership in the American Pediatric Surgical Association, British Association of Paediatric Surgeons, Society of University Surgeons, American Association of Thoracic Surgery, Society for Vascular Surgery, American College of Surgeons, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, The American Heart Association, and the New York Academy of Science as well as many other local and 747

regional societies. At the time of his death, he was Chairman of the Credentials Committee of APSA. In addition to his wife, the former Genevieve Rice, he is survived by a son, Jens G. Rosenkrantz, Jr of Cincinnati, two daughters, Karen (a surgical resident in New York) and Elsa of Long Beach, Calif, and his mother, Dr Rachel Warrington (Mrs Rachel Pease). Jim's family, local friends, and colleagues have arranged for a memorial to be established in his memory at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Their goal is to establish a Jens Rosenkrantz Chair of Pediatric Surgery. In addition, a memorial fund is being established by his many friends within the

Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics to encourage and support scientific presentations by residents in training. Jim will be remembered by his many friends throughout the world as an outstanding academic surgeon, by his friends at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital as a respected surgeon and an outstanding teacher of surgical principles, and by his many other friends outside the profession as a fine human being.
