Blue glue Just a hint of a tint, claim the manufacturers- National Adhesives - - for Blue Bond, a high technology emulsion adhesive developed for case and carton sealing. The pale blue colour of the liquid adhesive allows easy visual monitoring dudng gluing. However, the makers claim that Blue Bond is invisible when dry. Originally developed as an emulsion adhesive the dry and semi-dry films of which would be easily redispersible in water and therefore facilitate easy cleaning, Blue Bond offers many other advantages. It has improved mileage, making it economical in use, and a fast setting time, enabling speeding-up of production. A strong bond is claimed for this adhesive even with porous substrates. Three grades of Blue Bond are available, varying in viscosity to suit different applicants. It can be used with a vadety of applicators including wheel, roller, ball pen, low pressure extruder, or spray. The manufacturers state that steps have been taken to ensure that no harmful ingredients have been added to the formulation, thus safeguarding the health of the operator.

National Adhesives and Resins Limited, Slough, Berks, SL 1 4DF, England. Water resistant adhesive For applications where a high degree of water resistance is required, such as in paper sack and corrugated case manufacture, Borden (UK) Limited have developed Plastiflex A-421, an emulsion adhesive. Based on an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, the adhesive has a high solids content and low viscosity (allowing fast setting S ~ to be attained) and is claimed to have good adhesion to a range of coated boards and papers. It offers clean machining charectedstics at high running speeds and can be applied by roller, wheel, extrusion nozzle, or spray. Also newly developed from Borden is an alkaline phenolic

foundry resin, AJphaset TPA-2. This is a cold setting sand-binder which can be used to bond alkaline or poor quality sands as well as high silica-content foundry sands. Full details on Plaatiflex A-421 are given in Technical Information Bulletin 2092, available from: The

Optical epoxy Epoxy Technology Incorporated, Billerica, U ~ , have introduced Epo- Tek 302-3, a two-component, optically transparent epoxy adhesive system. It is a low

viscosity 100% solids system which is claimed to exhibit little shdnkage on curing and is therefore suitable for potting applications. It is particularly effective for bonding optical fibres into connectors, lens or prism bonding, and pigtailirlg to LEDs. The adhesive can be cured overnight at room temperature or accelerated curing can be accomplished at 60°C in 90 minutes, giving an operating temperature range o f - - 5 5 to 125°C. Epo-Tek 302-3 has a shelf life of one year and a pot life of 1.5 to 2 hours. Trial evaluation kits (prices on request) and further information may be obtained from: Cohtact

Sales Department, Epoxy Technology lnc, PO Box 567, Billerica, MA 01821, USA.

INTJJ~,DHESION AND ADHESIVES APRIL 1982

A technical seminar, organized by The Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (USA), is to take place at the Cherry Hill Inn, New Jersey, on 2 1 - 2 3 June 1982. The theme will be "Technology, Regulation and Profitability" and speakers are being asked to discuss technology and then to relate it to regulation and profitability. The papers to be presented will cover a wide range of subjects relating to the manufacture and use of pressure sensitive adhesives. Additional information about the 1982 PSTC Technical Seminar can be obtained from: The I~enure

Sens'rtive Tape Council, 1800 Pickwick Avenue, Glenview, IL 60025, USA.
