market prospects Powering the Wastewater Renaissance provides an analysis of energy efficiency in the wastewater management industry and assesses how the global water sector can reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions with existing, proven technologies. The report, which studied the wastewater sector in the US, Europe and China, assessed 18 distinct abatement opportunities – from pumps used to transport the water, to the blowers used to aerate it, to the various filtration systems used to treat it. The greatest investment return and emissions abatement opportunities were found in China, where 100% of the emissions abatement opportunities analysed could be realised at zero or negative cost. In this region, where the government is actively investing in water infrastructure, more than US$25 billion in net savings can be generated with the adoption of high efficiency wastewater technologies. With the addition of the United States and Europe, the savings exceed US$40 billion. The report notes two levers that would accelerate adoption of highly efficient wastewater technologies. First, new financing models that incentivise investments in lowcarbon technologies would assist with the initial higher capital costs that often come with these advanced technologies. Second, increasing the energy efficiency standards of wastewater equipment would ensure broader adoption. This report was initiated as part of Xylem’s commitment to advancing sustainable solutions in the water sector. For further information, visit http// poweringwastewater.xyleminc.com/

Chicago plant aims to reduce energy costs using GE’s ZeeLung MABR

A

s part of its plan to become energy neutral by 2023, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is evaluating GE’s new ZeeLung Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) technology. Energy neutrality is the ability to reduce energy consumption while increasing energy production to the point that a facility produces as much or more energy than it consumes. 4

This is increasingly important since water and wastewater treatment typically accounts for 35% of a municipality’s energy budget. The demonstration project at O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant in Skokie, Illinois, aims to prove ZeeLung’s ability to remove nutrients in the plant’s existing footprint and reduce the energy required for biological aeration by 40%. ZeeLung is a gas-transfer membrane, which transfers oxygen by diffusion to a biofilm that grows on the outside surface of the membrane. The microorganisms in the biofilm remove nutrients and organics in the wastewater by metabolising them in the presence of oxygen. The result is a four times reduction in energy compared to conventional fine bubble aeration systems in use today. In June 2015, the MWRD and GE commissioned a demonstration of one ZeeLung MABR cassette at the O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant to prove the concept works. The district will then consider whether to install the technology in the full-scale plant, one of the largest sewage treatment facilities in the United States.

its wastewater treatment plant with membrane technology from WABAG to deal with seasonal peak loads. WABAG is to replace the current biodisc reactor technology with a modern MARAPUR membrane bioreactor system. The combination of activated sludge biology and ultrafiltration is able to cope with seasonal fluctuations while securing all-year nitrification. In the tourism off-season, the treatment plant handles the municipal wastewater from 3000 local inhabitants. However, during the winter ski season, the population can increase to around 12 500. The WABAG contract covers the design, engineering, delivery, installation and start-up of the electromechanical equipment and measurement systems for the membrane technology including the upstream fine sieves. WABAG will also be responsible for the disassembly of the old plant machinery. The conversion work will take place during full plant operation in two stages with start-up in 2017 and 2018.

EFTEC 2015 was the largest and most successful event to date, attracting 25 048 registrants and 1033 exhibitors. The Water Environment Federation’s (WEF) 88th annual water quality conference and exhibition was held on 26–30 September in Chicago. “For more than 80 years, WEFTEC has been the world’s leading forum for water quality management,” said WEF executive director Eileen O’Neill. “It’s the place to innovate, exchange knowledge, and connect with experts from across the continent, and around the world. The record-breaking success of this year’s event is a testament to the value, diversity, and depth for which WEFTEC is known and respected.” The event currently rotates between Chicago and New Orleans. WEFTEC 2016 will be held on 24–28 September at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. Submissions for the 2016 Call for Abstracts will be accepted through 1 December 2015.
